Description I was getting into my pickup when something flashed right by me. I turned around to look, thinking it was probably one of the ubiquitous pigeons that populate the city. I was surprised to see what I'm pretty sure is a Cooper's Hawk sitting in a tree right beside my drive way. I carefully took out my camera and stepped slowly closer and snapped a few shots before it flew away.

Cool shot! This is actually a Sharp-shinned hawk as opposed to a Cooper's. Note the small beak to head size ratio, the "no neck" appearance, and the lack of a sort of crest to the head.

There are pigeons everywhere across the US. My in-laws have pigeons on their farm in the middle of North Dakota, and pigeons nest on the cliffs at the park I work at.

Thank you.

Dang it... I hit "Send" before I was finished...

Because by the time a Northern Goshawk's eyes turn that color it's plummage has turned gray. It's realy the facial markings that identify it as a Cooper's.

ahhh...ok. i'm just now starting to study my birds we have locally and i don't have the greatest of information on juvenile birds........i'm having big trouble id'ing juvenile bald and golden eagles...........i've yet to see the Goshawk or the Coopers here.......~sigh~.......

What guidebook do you use? If you don't have it, I recommend The Sibley Guide to Birds, published by the Audubon Society. It's a larger book, but well worth it.

i've just the Audubon Field Guide.....for the western region.....i need one for central..........and i've a basic overall field guide that has some great information/illustrations........

Too small to be a goshawk, and eyes are the wrong color too.
