Description A BNSF mixed freight bound from Laurel, MT to Havre, MT passes through the S-curve along the Sun River Valley at Manchester, MT in the early morning of April 14, 2008. Quite an interesting mix of power on the front of this one, consisting of BNSF SD40-2 8019 (ex-BN 8019), Norfolk Southern SD60 6644, BNSF Dash 9-44CW 4805, BNSF GP60B 344, BNSF Dash 9-44CW 635, Norfolk Southern SD60 6683, and BNSF Dash 9-44CW 761.

I chased this train up to Shelby, and it caused more than a little consternation for the Shelby dispatcher as he couldn't find a good spot to fit them in and get them moving east to Havre. The crew of this train sounded like the kids in the backseat asking "Are we there yet?" every five seconds...

Great shot in a classic style!

On a side note, for only having roughly 50-60 cars, that's a lot of power.

Thanks!

It's partly a power transfer to Havre, and partly that the grade needs the extra tractive effort.

I'm always amazed by american trains. They just go on forever.

The locomotives alone are longer than some freight trains (even international ones) I've seen here.

For that matter, is the fourth locomotive really a B-unit, or am I seeing things?

Yes, it's a GP60B. Same unit as in Diesel Cab XIII , which I shot after the train made it up to Shelby, Montana.
