Paul, I feel very wrong giving you any critique as I am a smallfry in your company
there is one small thing, and only one, that I could even consider and that is the dark values. I feel like they should be a little darker than they are, especially towards us (ie the front part or the face down to the nostrils and lips) I look at the eye and the tips of the horns, and feel like the nose area needs a darker value as in those parts. I realise it could be the fault of the photo, glare etc. Also I haven't seen your reference and if it's like that in the photo/s then obviously disregard what I said
I still think it's an awesome piece either way, I really like the feeling of evening light and how it falls on the neck and the bony parts on the forehead!

Mandy... for starters, you are no small fry, and your comments are always valid.... I have to say it is the photograph... I took another pic, with my canon, but it came out slightly blue, stealing the warm highlight in the white, but the darks are very much darker in reality, I just wish I was better with the camera, to take a more representative pic... I will keep trying. Thank you for looking and commenting, pointing things out is very valuable to me, especially from an accomplished artist as yourself. So please keep looking in on my pics and keep the comments coming... it really is appreciated, and honesty is what Im after, my mum can tell me they are fantastic no matter what they look like... Paul

ahh I thought it must be the photo! I'll have a look at the new image...
I have a hard time getting decent photos of paintings as well. I've just worked out a new way which is to set my camera to TV mode (shutter priority - you set the shutter speed) also tripod and manual focus... it seems often I can do a better job focusing properly on the painting than the camera can on autofocus!
And I always have to spend a considerable amount of time post-processing on Photoshop to get the colours and levels on the photo to look anything like the actual thing...

I have discovered there are lots of weird things about the giraffe in general, the ears being just one thing lol.... they are the strangest creature... Paul
