Description
Brother of the Eldrbruin
GENERAL OVERVIEWBears are an adaptable species commonly found across Hvalla. They generally prefer to avoid confrontation, but this doesn’t make them any less dangerous. Exercise care when encountering one, as they will attack if provoked.
In generations past, the Bear was hunted nearly to extinction. Their pelts were worn as coats by the brave and noble as a sign of strength, or displayed in homes as a show of wealth and prosperity. To preserve the species, bear hunts were declared illegal by many cities across Hvalla. Though not all unique strains of the Bear survived, those that did were able to flourish, and soon repopulated what was lost. Their unprecedented recovery has resulted in the ban being lifted, though as their pelts have fallen out of style they have little to fear from trappers anymore.
The Bear is a creature synonymous with the wild and its protection. Inhabiting all manner of forest, mountain and tundra, they have proven themselves to be exceptionally resourceful. As their population increases, individuals are forced to interact more frequently; where food is plentiful it seems the Bears reach a point of peaceful coexistence.
In order to survive in such a wide range of environments, a Bear’s diet is completely determined by availability. They are opportunistic feeders, able to effectively digest meat, plants and insects alike. In late winter and early summer they hunt mainly newborn ungulates like deer and elk. Through the summer they turn their attention to the plentiful grasses, roots and insects. Towards the end of summer is when nuts become plentiful and they prepare for hibernation. Bears living near water also have the opportunity to prey on spawning fish at certain times of year. They have also been known to contest wargs for their kills, though it’s not always a successful venture.BEHAVIOR and APPEARANCEWhile less aggressive than the Eldrbruin, Bears are no laughing matter. Equal in size to the average Icewarg and armed to the teeth, the swipe of an adult’s paw is enough to shatter bone. Their heavy-set frame doesn’t appear capable of fast movement, but their speed should not be underestimated. A Bear in its prime can easily keep pace with a fleeing warg.
Bears have developed to best suit the regions they inhabit. Those living in the northern regions have thick fur ranging from white to dark brown, while southern bears exhibit shorter coats in creamy hues with dark bellies. All Bears have a water-resistant undercoat to protect and insulate their bodies. Creating their dens in caves, under trees, and in the snow, Bears aren’t picky about where they call home. Rather than carving out their own and wasting valuable energy, most prefer to hole up in existing locations be they naturally occurring or previously inhabited. The exceptions to this are the northernmost individuals who usually have little choice in the matter due to frequent snowfall.
WEAKNESSESA single warg might be enough, but why take the risk when you can double your odds. Bears have difficulty focusing on multiple opponents, and they will tend to focus on individuals when attacking which makes hunting in groups a more ideal method of attack. In addition, Bears are dangerous close combatants, but they have nothing in the way of ranged attacks. Arrows can be an effective tool to slow or even kill one before it reaches you.
The warg depicted is representative of the max height for the race.
