Description I really can't think of titles omg

I read in the Wizard of Oz that witches wear white, and I though " you never see witches wearing white, do you? Well, not wicked witches at least..." and decided I would draw the Wicked Witch of the West wearing a white dress instead of a black one (she's also not wearing an eye patch so you can see her grizzled missing eye).

I really like this design!

I honestly think that you should go with your idea of the Witch wearing white. I wouldn't feel comfortable taking someone else's idea and I think it would work for your adaptation rather nicely. I think it could really work with the style you have of the story so far.

Thanks!!
I decided not to go this route in my comic, so the white dress idea is completely up for grabs in case you do want it.

Bastinda (the witch of the west) will appear in just a few pages in the comic, perhaps three or four pages from now, and you'll get to see a bit of her design. It's going to be very dark though, so that people still have something to look forward to later on in the comic when Dorothy goes to the west.

I might have a scene where Elverna is seen good, and I did find a picture that I really wanted to take inspiration from. I only realized the girl in the picture was wearing white until after you mentioned it to me.

Here's the picture...

I'm not sure as of now. I definitely want to make her look "good", so white isn't a bad idea.

First off LOVE that name. It's unique and it sounds really cool! Second, I don't think that's a bad idea. It all just depends on how important the Witch of the West it to your story. If she's only a minor character, that doesn't sound like a bad idea.

Just out of curiosity, do you know of any things from the original book that you will for sure be taking out?

Oh haha! That's really cool though. I think her wearing white at first and slowly getting darker as her character does could be a neat idea.
I really like that picture! I could totally see Elverna looking like that when she was good.

Thanks! My version is slightly inspired by the Russian translation of the book, which had a few differences from the original (for ex. the wicked witches had names), and that's where Bastinda came from.

My comic is going to stay relatively close to the original novel without to many differences. I know for sure, however, that Glinda is going to be the mostly Good Witch of the South, but other than that I don't see too many changes. There might be a few things here and there that are different, however

Yeah, If I were to show her when she was good, I'd probably show the back story of when and how Elverna mt the Wizard and intimately got her heart shattered to pieces because of him. The Wizard would be telling Dorothy and I could see him feeling very bad about himself for what he did to her. I still haven't decided what the Wizard does to Elverna, but it's got to really hurt her to have it turn her evil.

I imagine that Elverna was actually the kindest and purest of the sisters (hence why white would make perfect sense.) She's was always the positive and optimistic girl who took charge, but after what the Wizard does to her, she turns dark and evil and plots to get revenge on everyone she felt did her wrong.

What are your thoughts on my tying Glinda into how that Wizard broke her heart?

Oh really? I didn't know that the Russian version was different. That's really interesting to know. I'll try and avoid it so you can use any of it. I've already got a pretty big list of plans for the story and it's really going to steer from the original content.

Cool. I really love the original story so it's good that someone is staying true to it's original beauty.

What do you mean by Glinda being mostly Good?

I can see Elverna being a very kind and sweet person at first- those who are the kindest can become the darkest when hurt, and I know from personal experience.

I think if you tied Glinda into Elverna and The Wizard's relationship, it would venture too close to being like Oz the Great and Powerful (at least in my opinion). I think you should find some other way around it, say, perhaps the wizard gave her the wrong idea and she blew his 'love' out of proportion, and when he told her there was nothing, she started to turn wicked? I'm not sure, I'll let you think of other ideas if you want.

Bastinda has a very different history though- she grew up the daughter of wealthy merchant and always knew refinery. As she got older and her parents died, she lost a source of income and decided to try and become ruler of the Winkie country. However, they didn't want her to become their queen so she disappeared for a great many years. In that time, she hunted down the golden cap and eventually used it to take over the land of the west. A great battle commenced, and Glinda and Locasta even came to help the winkies fight Bastinda, but she ultimately won and became ruler (however, Locasta got water on Bastinda's right eye, ruining it). When the wizard landed in the Winkie Country, she used the cap again to drive him out of Oz, and eventually she evaporated all the water from Winkieland as well.

Yeah, Volkov (the translator) took quite a few liberties, although most of them fit in smoothly with Baum's story. Since they didn't seem too out of place, I felt it fit to use some of them in my version ^^

So, I don't believe that any one person is completely good or bad 100%, I believe in gray areas, so Glinda is mooostly good, but still has a bit of darkness to her. Similarly, the Witch of the North could easily bring Gingema back to life after being crushed, but she chooses not to. Take a look at her face and reaction in the comic when Dorothy asks "Whatever shall we do?" and you might pick up on the fact that even she isn't 100% good.

I'm probably going to draw a picture of her when she was good very soon since ideas are starting to pop up in my head. I know what you mean. People do stupid things when they're in love, but a bad break up can cause really bad things... especially when you break up with a Witch. lol

you have a really good point there. I think I'll come up with something different. The only thing about the Wizard not loving he in return is that I've already got another relationship problem like that with Revolta... *cough cough* tin man. XD

In a weird way, I still want the Wizard to be on love with Elverna (in some weird and confusing way), but something in him breaks it off anyway or something.

Ok that back story for Bastinda is really cool. I still haven't decided if I'll have the golden cap, the whistle, and such, but I know I'm going to have the winged monkeys. I feel like the Russian version just seems to go more in depth to the original story. It doesn't seem to me like anything is changed, but I could be wrong.

Yeah, you have a point there. I don't know if Glinda will do anything less good, but she might. I still haven;t decided how evil I want Elverna to be since I want the audience to show sympathy for her in a way, yet still want her to lose.

lol I did notice her face was a bit "not sorry," but I assumed that she just didn't approve her the Wicked Witch's ways and thought she sort of deserved it or at least needed to be stopped. That's a really cool twist to throw in there. Great job at that execution. It was subtle, yet I still noticed ir and definitely get a reaction out of it.

Haha thanks
I have a revised version that I posted on my fb a few days ago- it should be up here pretty soon. I'm also going to have previous versions in the margins, and maybe a character bio (I'm thinking of doing this for all of the characters).

I was actually thinking of having Andromeda wear white because the Wicked Witch was afraid of the dark o-o Idk though cause it probably won't suit her.

This looks like concept art for an upcoming Oz movie or something You've seriously got some wicked painting skills.
I love how GNARLY her hands look and the face looks amazing. You know, she kind of looks like the old woman from the movie, Drag Me to Hell.

I love this. Very creepy! And the white actually suits her which is kind of surprising to me cause like you said, you never really see witches wear white!

Oooh! That would look so cool on her!! Maybe she could wear white at night time, and wear other clothing during the day?
In my version, I pictured the Witch first seeing them at night, and she would be wearing a white dressing gown- then as time goes by the dress gets darker and darker until the moment when she melts, and the dress is a dark, muddy-blood color.

Thank you very much!! I love drawing old-people hands and faces. They're so expressive and detailed!
I've always dreamed of making an Oz movie someday, based off of the books. Maybe if I ever do end up at Pixar I could pitch that as an idea?!
It's so funny that you mention that!! When I was done drawing her I thought to myself "Gosh, she looks like the lady from Drag Me to Hell!"
I was trying to go for the Angela Lansbury, grumpy old lady look, but I guess that didn't work out

Thank you, thank you!!
Like the tile says, I think white can be scarier than black if done the right way.

That's actually a pretty good idea. It would probably be a really over the top night dress... with frills or something. Anyway lol
Are you sure you don't want to make a Wizard of Oz comic? Cause that idea sounds so cool! I actually had a similar idea with Rothbart for SL where he has more royal colors near the beginning, and as the comic progresses, his clothes start to become more brown... more owl colors. But yeah, that's a really cool idea!

I know! And they're so cute too.
Oh, please-- you'd totally end up at Pixar. And if not, start up your own animation company. XDD hire me too please. .-.
Oh wow!
I think she turned out to be even better.

Yeah, it works on most Japanese ghosts. lol

Yeah, I've always loved to think she would have lots of lace and beads on her clothing. A lot of people tend to make her living in practically ruins, but I think she would probably take all the wealth of her kingdom for herself and spend it on expensive tapestries and clothing etc.
I would love to, if I ever get the chance. I'm just really busy now (applying for colleges, tons of tests and stuff at school, other random things I have to do) and I don't think I can handle something like that just right now.
Perhaps later, though

Oooh, that would be so neat!! I can picture your design of him right now with the royal colors... very nice idea!!
I need to get my design of him up here...

Yeah, old people can be pretty adorable some times
I'd like to think so...  I could totally see you there, though. Your style is perfect for Pixar
Oh yes I would definitely hire you XDDDD
Aww, thank you

Yeah, I've noticed that. They're usually portrayed in white, aren't they?

I know I would .__.

Yeah, I understand.

Yes. Yes you do need to get your design of him up here.

Aw, thanks haha. Do you know how to work with 3d animation? o-o I was only planning to work as a concept artist if I ever got in there.

Yeah, I read up on that and apparently, it's cause they're buried in white with their hair down.

Haha, I should, shouldn't I? I'll put that at the top of my list.

No, not really. I know how to do simple 2D animation, but I think if I worked at it long enough I could figure out how to do 3D.
That's probably what I would end up doing But hey, making concept art sounds more fun than drawing the same character day after day, right?

Hmmm. I never heard that before! I guess it makes perfect sense.

Same with me. I used to want to be an animator, but there are so many different options for doing art... oh well~
