Description The ruins of the Holyrood Abbey in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was dedicated to St. Augustine and built in 1128 on order of the King of Scotland. It was used frequently up until the 15th century when it became a chapel for the Knights of the Order of the Thistle. After this conversion it was wrecked by a mob and left in disrepair until the roof collapsed in the 18th century.

This is a view of the ruined nave looking towards the altar.

White charcoal pencil, 2B, 4B, and 6B charcoal pencils on gray sketch paper.

Thanks. If you've been to Scotland than you might have seen this place. Unfortunately, there's not too many classical ruins here in the US.

beautiful and stark, yet ominous at the same time. Nice job.

Thank you. I think those words capture it perfectly. I didn't start out with the intention of making it seem ominous; it wound up turning out that way by the end. Then again, most ruins have that sense of past violence about them.

Indeed. It's romantically sinister.

Ah, does it? I don't believe I've ever played that game. If that's the case then I guess it can be construed as fanart.

I'm not sure. I've been very busy with work lately. I usually don't know what I intend to draw until I just start drawing it.

Thanks. I liked the shadowy nature of the whole picture. The gray paper helped.

Your use of light and shading is absolutely beautiful.
*stares*
You've captured a dark emotion in this piece, and it's just...amazing.

Thank you. I liked this one. I did it on gray paper to help get the background really somber and engimatic. I've started practicing on using the black and gray paper and shading with chalk and pastels. It offers an interesting reversal of drawing dark on white paper.

It just takes practice and some simple subject matter. The first drawings I did like that were simply still lifes with pots/pans and other mundane things until I got the hang of shading white on black.

I agree that it does.
But alas, I've never been able to pull off such a feat.

Woah, it has a very dark feeling to it.
Or maybe it's just the charcoal...
You're very good with charcoal, by the way.
I prefer pencil and then going over it in ink pens, but that's just me..
I very nice picture!
Good job!

HWolfer In reply to grenades [2007-07-04 18:43:42 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. Yeah, I like the charcoals even though they're messy. This one was fun because of the gray paper and having to shade in reverse.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

HWolfer In reply to HWolfer [2007-07-05 02:17:49 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I like to switch it up and draw on the black or gray paper. Shading in reverse or using only certain hues and colors is challenging and makes for an interesting drawing.
