Description When the EM-2 went through the cracks as an assault rifle concept for the UK, the L1A1 would take it's place, but the past inspired the future with the L85, the variant in a family of the SA80 family of assault rifles. By the 1960s, the SA80 had become the next generation in assault rifles, chambered in the 4.85mm round. The overall design of the SA80 took from the older EM-2 rifle and proved to be much more successful in the long run. By the 1980s, the SA80 introduced a newer variant, the L85, which chambered the now standard 5.56mm NATO. Since it's introduction, the L85 remains in active service with the United Kingdoms Armed Forces, with variants such as the L85A1 and A2 assault rifles modified by Heckler & Koch, as well as an LMG variant known as the L86.

The L85 is a variant of the SA80 family of assault rifles, developed by RSAF Enfield and Royal Ordinance. The rifle is of a bullpup configuration, much like the previous models in the family, with a rate of fire from 610-775 rounds per minute, with a muzzle velocity of 930–940 m/s (3,100–3,100 ft/s). The rifle is chambered in the 5.56mm NATO ammunition and loads from STANAG magazines.
