This is gonna need practice! I mean when there are serveral levels of shade and not just 2 or 3, does it get confusing at all? And..will I need to use different pencils to achieve different levels of shades?

I use mechanical pencils for my portraits - just mechanical pencils I know a lot of people use charcoal or HB/2B, etc...not me, so its possible to get all the lights and darks you'll need (at least in my opinion). For me, it's all about how much pressure I put in my hand when I press. So, for Alicia's hair, for example, I started in the darkest areas and did large sweeping strokes with a lot of pressure, letting up as I approached the areas needing light. For skin, I always do a very light dusting across the area and blend, then build up in areas that need darker shades. I blend, but not a lot or else the light areas get darker and they don't need to be. With clothes, I start with the dark folds most of the time and radiate out from there. Hope this helps! Let me know if you need anything clarified!! I'm not used to giving portrait pointers haha
