Flying Man is a resident of Magicant in MOTHER 1 and 2. Ness and Ninten can take one of five flyingman with them to defend themselves from attackers. They can take mortal damage though, and once they are gone, they are dead. You can see their grave stones.
They were absent from MOTHER 3.
Personally I think Flying Man could stand to do some training.

Gosh, very first time I played Earthbound, I took one but I losed him. When I went back to get one more of them, I saw a grave and it was from the one I lost... I didn't even dare to ask for another to keep on with me and went all by myself, it made me uneasy and didn't want anyone to die. asdfsaaf

They're cool to have around, and they survive more easily in the original Mother, but when they die, I kind of feel bad, especially when they get less and less sympathetic over the next one's death.
