Description First Appearance - The Great Giana Sisters ( Commodore 64, 1987 )

Theme Music - [link]

A long time ago, when Super Mario Bros was still new, and as it still is today, and awesome hit, a clone of the game was born.

The Great Giana Sisters was made, and 8 bit game for PC owners who couldn't play some Mario.

The game was way too similar to Super Mario Bros however, so it was shut down by Nintendo before it could make much money, but it was then distributed as freeware. I can't figure out my commodore 64 Emulator for the life of me so I can't play it.

But the Sisters are coming back this year.

They are getting a brand new DS game, supposedly a remake of the original with enhanced graphics, different character designs, and it's supposedly just slightly different enough from SMB to be allowed to be released...or so I hear. Maybe Nintendo cut a deal or something, IDK.

Either way, I want to try it out. I hear it's the best thing for people who want a New Super Mario Bros 2.

I can't tell if the blond and the red head are sisters, or if the redhead is the "Fire Mario" of the game. The main character, Giana, identifies more with Mario than Wario however, as her goal is to get back hundreds of her stolen diamonds that she hordes for herself.

I don't know if the blonde and the redhead are the same, but I only saw three pieces of character artwork. The Redhead, I assume is Giana, the Mario of the game, The Blond I assume is Maria, the Luigi of the game. And I saw another character, a little fat green Dragon who looked like King Koopa from the Mario Cartoon. I assume he's the Bowser of the game.

There are no Goombas in the game. The goomba's of GGS appear to be little Owl monsters. I just drew that Goomba to express the similarity to Mario...

That and I figured some people wanted to see her get chased after I drew her down on her luck husband getting some bad news ( See my Doctor Mario pic for details )

Just to let you know those 2 aren't sisters. The red haired girl is Punk Giana. The blond haired girl is just Giana. Punk Giana is an upgrade. Punk Giana can shoot fireballs (no super mode then fire mode). This means there's only one level of upgrade, normal Giana to Punk Giana (no separate fireflower to go from super to fire mode, equivelant to going from small mario to fire mario in just one upgrade). Therefore having Giana and Punk Giana on the same screen (as shown in your picture) would not happen, as they are actually one and the same character (not sisters, and in fact I can't figure out who is her sister).

I know becuase I got a rom of the DS version of the game and played it on my emulator. So I can give you some actual info on the game.

Only Giana appera in Giana Sisters DS, the redhead is Punk Giana which is a Fire Mario ripoff and the blond is normal Giana

I heard about this game via Screw Attack Europe's YouTube account. Aside from the fact that it's a total clone of SMB, the "sisters" looked like hookers when you look at their character art. Thank god the DS version changed that...

It's confirmed, that Punk-girl is the "Fire Giana" of the game.

Reason is here:

Maria was kind of a bolt-on to the original game, a second-player palette swap character about as integral as I recall Luigi being in the original Super Mario outing. (Seriously, look at the Great Giana Sisters and Super Mario Bros. cover art on Wikipedia. Neither one conveys the idea that there's two of them. On the other hand, the Mario Bros. art, a game where both players can play simultaneously and are thus equals in all but top billing, features both. If Luigi didn't exist and Mario Bros. were a single-player game called Mario, I doubt he would have been created for Super Mario.)

Two-DS simultaneous two-player version would've been neat too, but requires a metric ton of extra work on the back end. (It also departs further from the original game concept.) I've done a small bit of work on games as a tester and I've seen where the awesome ideas in a design document get knocked out by reality in the form of deadlines, budgets, viability and even the personalities of the dev team. Without having tons of info that's unavailable to us, we won't know if either of these ideas was considered and scrapped or not.

I'm still having kind of feeling that Maria is in the game- Maybe waiting next to the bed where Giana is "dreaming", hoping that her sister gets back safely.

And... maybe she's kind laidback girl like Luigi is.

Yeah. Supposedly it came out a while ago, and it came out just last month in the US... unfortunately it seems very low key. The gamestop where I live didn't have the game in their computer, so they couldn't pre-order it, and they have zero copies.

In the original game, Giana was a blond and Maria was a redhead

in their super forms they got spiky hair

in the DS remake Giana's super form is a spiky-haired redhead
Not sure how to interpret that
Maybe a Dr. Jekyll / Mr. Hyde thing?

I wish I could play it, but at my local gamestop it doesn't show up in the computer... And they don't usually get copies of games nobody pre-orders....

Ahh, so that's why I don't know who they are.

Maybe sometime I will. I can't seem to figure out C64 emulators so I can't properly test the game.

Hmm... I ask because it's one of the favorites of Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw of Zero Punctuation fame. He called it the "Best Game Evar", though looking back, he said the nostalgia of it had a lot to do with it.
