Description This is the old version of my full-scale replica of the title mask from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. It was a labor of love, requiring weeks to complete, but is as accurate as I could make it with the materials I had back then.

Built-in ribbons, light weight, and a concave back lined with purple velvet make it fully wearable, though there are no eye openings and the wearer cannot see. This seemed fitting, given the sinister nature of the mask.
A detachable accessory adds twisting, red tendrils that hang down from behind the mask almost to the wearer's feet, making for a striking wall display as well.

Some discrepancy exists between the final piece and the original Nintendo art. This is because I also closely referenced game images, which differ slightly in proportions and colors. Overall I'm reasonably pleased with it, but have since made a new version which is much improved.

You can see a couple of photos of this version as part of a costume at my cosplay.com gallery .

[Note: The old mask is not for sale, but I have a new version which is. This year I finally got around to making a whole new, much smoother sculpture and am slowly creating reproductions to sell. See the new version below!]

This is the old Majora's Mask. My new masks are the ones that I sell and they're based on a completely new sculpt. I probably won't have any to sell for a long time yet but when I do I will notify my Watchers here on DA.

HylianJean In reply to blacJAC396 [2011-08-14 22:00:05 +0000 UTC]

I'm not making this version, this is the old mask, nothing to do with the new ones which are here: [link] Please do read the description there.

I don't know when the 25th Anniversary concert is to be held, but there is a long list of buyers already and it's quite likely to take at least eight months to get through them. I can still add you to the list if you would like, however.

This one isn't for sale, but that's also because it's not as good as the new ones I've made which are for sale.

I'm considering $150 USD or so for this if you're selling!!!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HylianJean In reply to JFG123 [2011-03-01 17:35:29 +0000 UTC]

This particular one took months of work and would be much too expensive to sell. However, I'm in the middle of developing a mold to reproduce it, and have a (probably vain) hope of having that done by Easter, in which case that's the ballpark figure I intend to sell for. If you'd like I'll let you know.

JFG123 In reply to HylianJean [2011-03-01 23:54:16 +0000 UTC]

Umm sure. I don't have enough money yet anyway so that's fine. When you make them, how much do you think they'll cost and how will any of us pay for it?

DragonElement11 [2011-02-23 14:12:53 +0000 UTC]

This is really awesome. Everything is right on and practically perfect. I made a Majora's Mask once....though it's ceramic, super heavy, unwearable, a little lopsided, and totally off in the colors XD (though I must say it does look pretty good hung up in the garage Ahaha.) What did you use to make this one? Paper Mache?

Zeldanerdster [2010-10-28 16:51:01 +0000 UTC]

I have to say that I would absolutely love to own this. It's impossible to find a replica anywhere it seems. (In addition to not even looking as good as this one, the one on Moon Costumes has been on "back order" for 2-3 years.)

If EVER you decide to do a commission, please let me know. I'd pay well for something this amazing!

Could you open commissions for this? I know its been asked if you'd sell this one but, I think if you made more to sell, you'd make alot. It'd be an amazing cosplay prop, and I'd buy it

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HylianJean In reply to Kyoku-Maggot [2010-10-13 23:31:05 +0000 UTC]

I'm very interested in doing so, actually. I just haven't had the time yet to invest in mould-making and casting. I'll be sure to make it known when I eventually start on some reproductions!

HylianJean In reply to KrazeeKunoichi [2009-12-16 20:42:33 +0000 UTC]

Well, they say that everything has its price. I'd consider selling this if the price was right, but it'd be very expensive because of the time and energy and attention to detail that is in it. Drop me a note if you're serious. I'd at least be interested to hear what price you'd consider purchasing it for.

kid-cody [2009-11-06 04:21:21 +0000 UTC]

so its lightweight and wearable you say?
what other materials did you use besides craft foam?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HylianJean In reply to kid-cody [2009-11-17 21:42:46 +0000 UTC]

That it is! I also used papier-mΓ’chΓ© and paper clay.

kid-cody In reply to HylianJean [2009-11-18 04:49:48 +0000 UTC]

THAT'S PAPER MACHE?! amazing... I can never seem to do this with paper mache alone, how did you get its surface so smooth?

questions I have to ask you.

1. Is there any foam connected to the mask at any part? if so where?

2. what exactly is holding the paper together? is it a mix of heated flour and water? is is liquid starch? or is it something else?

3. what kind of paint did you use? was there any lacquer or any form of primer involved for an under coat?

and 4. what techniques did you use to give the final product such a fine surface? any tips you can give me?

thank you.

HylianJean In reply to kid-cody [2009-11-19 10:41:50 +0000 UTC]

::laughs for a good long while at the expression on that emoticon::

You want me to divulge my construction secrets!

I can tell you that I did not use any rare or notably expensive materials. What I did was a whole lot of carving, sanding, smoothing, and dry-brush blending of paint for gradients.
(Though, I'll admit I've probably divulged more information than this in other comments on other pictures of this mask in my gallery. lol )

They say that costume art can be made fast, cheap, and perfect, but only two of those at the same time. This one went for accuracy and low cost at the expense of weeks and weeks of my time and effort.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kid-cody In reply to HylianJean [2009-11-20 18:06:46 +0000 UTC]

its definitely accurate. I don't think there is a more accurate model out there done with this technique!
thank you for the info.

Gosh this is awesome! I love how you shaped it to the right size to! ^^

But I have to ask, how or what did you use to make the base for the mask?

The base is carved out of craft foam. Messy, messy work!
