Description EDIT- People have been asking about my dividers, here is how I made them
The dividers I have in there are plastic mesh ([link] ) (used for cross-stitching) slipped into poster hangers ([link] ) and then securely stuck inside the tank The best way to secure it to the tank is my using aquarium-safe silicone Heres another angle of my tank, so you can see it better - [link] taken before I had live plants

...Staring my betta Albie. On the right, is how I shamefully kept him for a few months. On the left, is how he is kept now, in a 16g (60l) divided tank. He has just over 5g to himself

Left is good (not perfect), right is NOT good.

(Ahem... ignore the insane-ness of the light.. I broke the glass lid when I was cleaning the tank.... it now has a temporary lid of plastic sheets...)

For your betta to start being happy, a minimum of 2.5g (10l) of heated, conditioned, filtered water, with live or silk plants (not plastic, as they tear the bettas fins), a lid (bettas are jumpers) and a hiding place for your betta.

There is never too much room for your betta, only too little

Also never keep males with females, as they will still fight.. and certainly, never, under any circumstances have two males together, unless you want your fish to look like this - [link]

Is the fish on the far left of the big tank the same as the fish in the "not good" picture?

Indeed it is, I even mention that in the artists comment.

hi, what are the signs of an unhappy beta? i had one that lived in a large tank (bigger than yours) for about 3 years until my little brother killed it.Β

Hymnsie In reply to TMJumpLass [2014-01-16 05:11:18 +0000 UTC]

Sorry to hear that. An unhappy or unhealthy beta can be seen by clamped fins, hiding away, pale colour and/or not eating.

are they as intelligent as goldfish? from the old pictures of my beta, he seemed pretty happy. he always came to me for food and stuff, but for nobody else. he didn't even flinch or mind when i put my hand in there to clean out or replace the filter, it was really cool, and he didn't do that to anybody else

I don't know about their intelligence... Don't think it'd make much different how smart they are...

I m currently raising a male (I think) Betta baby I snagged from Petco. He was in a community 40 but did not look too happy so I moved him into one of seven 2 1/2 gallon tanks. He keeps me company when I'm doodling or doing website work! His color is barley starting to come in. It's a beautiful blue on his double tail fins! right now he has a heater that keeps it at a toasty 75 degrees and frozen food given to him daily so his little fissy body will grow big and strong. I tend to use the 'cube' tanks for Betta transport from one spot to another, or hospital tanks after mating. It's even a great hide y hole for the female during breeding just add some leaves and a rock to hold it down and bam! hide y hole.

Thanks for the quick reply to my question! I'll be able to get my 25 and 15 slotted for the summer!

~ Kisa

PS: Right now the genderless fish is named Buu Bear. Once I know a gender I will come up with a better name.

Its a minimum tank size, not ideal. As you can see in the pic my bettas live in larger than 2.5g.

Yes, I see! I was just saying that 5 gallons is much better. You are one of the only people in this world who believe fish bowls aren't appropriate homes.

Eeeek... 2.5 is good for one betta, but not two. I hope you have decent hiding spaces too as females can also be quite agressive. Honestly I dont think you shouldve bought the second female. I hope you can upgrade them to a proper tank soon

I'll be acquiring a ten gallon tank for a hatchling ball python to live in until he out grows it and into his adult tank, and when he's done with it, I'll have to make a divider and put both of my bettas in it. I have a blue, typical veiltail and a red and white crowntail. Both have about 3ish gallons right now.

Thats when I eventually get my snake haha, which could be god knows when because I cannot choose a morph to start saving for.

I have a question. I just set up my new ten gallon tank, divided it into two separate 'tanks' and they both have about, 5 gallons to themselves. Rather than 1.5 gallon, which my newest fish ( Jem) Is in. He's a tiny Dragon scale, and from the looks of it he already wishes he was in the tank ( Letting it settle.) Antonio in in his 2 gallon bowl in the kitchen, but he's about two. Do you think this is enough for the both of them?

Hymnsie In reply to xXRunepeltXx [2012-01-30 07:16:18 +0000 UTC]

So you have 2 fish and want to know if the divided 10 gallon is good? It is indeed! Thatd be a wonderful tank for them, just make sure you have it well filtered and heated Id love to see it once its setup and settled

Oh alright! I do in fact have heating and filter going on in it, though I had to build a block for the water current, it's working so far! ^^ I will be taking pictures once I get abit more plants for Jem's side~

This is a message I think everyone should see! I work at a pet store and whenever I sell a betta to someone, I always tell them that their betta will live a VERY short amount of time in tiny little tanks. We even have these TERRIBLE little half-gallon things with clear dividers in them, so the male bettas can see each other on either side to attack each other... it's absolutely vile! I always try to steer folks away from those.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hymnsie In reply to Majestic-Kirai [2011-06-12 05:54:19 +0000 UTC]

Thats wonderful to hear that you support this. I dont work in pet stores, but if I ever see people looking at the bettas I try starting a casual convo with them, telling them about how great the fish are and slip in something about tank size to them too

Majestic-Kirai In reply to Hymnsie [2011-06-12 15:26:27 +0000 UTC]

I'd love to have a tank like this, I don't have room for another tank now though But I was wondering, because the dividers are mesh, that stops them from seeing each other, but keeps it so you only have one filter and heater that does the whole lot? I've never worked with a divided tank before so I'm a bit curious as to how you go about filtering and heating ^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hymnsie In reply to tamedwhiskers [2011-03-24 08:33:18 +0000 UTC]

Yep, with the mesh you only need one heater and filter. Just make sure the temprature close to the heater is the same as the temp away from the heater, otherwise you may need another filter down the other end

Hymnsie In reply to DarkRedTigr [2011-01-18 00:57:55 +0000 UTC]

With the 100% water changes you should be doing every couple of days and the constant temp fluctuations because of the small space your betta cant be happy and healthy. I assure you, get them a 2.5+g tank with a heater and youll see the difference.

DarkRedTigr In reply to Hymnsie [2011-01-18 01:12:02 +0000 UTC]

He's brightly colored, eats happily, swims around happily, and he has no health problems. I put him in my 30 gal tank and he followed me wanting his vase back.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hymnsie In reply to DarkRedTigr [2011-01-20 12:48:58 +0000 UTC]

How can a betta eat 'happily'... anyway, I assue you, get him a heated 2.5g+ tank and you will see the difference. A 30g tank is not ideal for bettas, especially longfinned bettas.
Though Im sure you can live your live in a crappy cold broom closet, you would prefer a nice comfortable warm house...

DarkRedTigr In reply to Hymnsie [2011-01-20 20:06:18 +0000 UTC]

The betta thats in a vase is healthy as can be. He is 5 yrs old. He shows no signs of any illness. My other betta is in a gallon tank and his tail was split... its healing now. To let you know, my dad is a fish expert... he breed bettas and other fish. He had bettas in vases for other 7 yrs.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hymnsie In reply to DarkRedTigr [2011-01-30 07:57:27 +0000 UTC]

This convo is going nowhere. Im just going to keep saying that bettas NEED at LEAST 2.5g of heated filtered water. And youll keep defending your cruelty.
Your dad the 'fish expert', I cant so much believe that. Your keeping schooling fish alone, a pleco in a tiny tank and bettas in inadequate homes. I also breed bettas and know many others who breed them, all will say bettas need at least 2.5g of heated water for their full time housing.
