Description It was a rare event in New York. Countries and humans met under the cover of high society. Austria was used to high society events like this, but to learn each countries human name had been a hassle. But the work had been worth it and the cover was perfect.
“Ah, Ludwig.” He greeted with a nod as his cousin came to stand next to him.
“Roderich. How have you been?”
“Good. And yourself?”
“Yes, good.”
Silence. Awkward silence.
“Look over zhere, Roderich. Aren't zhat Alfred and Ivan?”
Austria looked into the direction Germany was pointing. There stood indeed the United States of America and Russia next to each other, conversing casually.
“I did not know they could be polite when in each others presence.” Austria commented.
“Me neither.” hummed Germany, then he was called away.
Austria decided to walk over and see about this mystery.
It was cleared as he spotted a young woman on Russia's arm. She was smiling gently, her (h/c) hair up done in an intricate bun with little white snowflakes in it. She wore a silver-white dress that reached down to her feet and silver jewelry. Her (e/c) eyes shone in the ballroom light and Austria was struck.
What a beauty. What was her connection to Russia?
“I have to say, Ms (last name), I loved your performance in Cinderella this spring in Moscow.” America commented politely.
“Thank you, Mr Jones. I am amazed an American would fly all the way to Moscow to see a ballet.”
Russia laughed lightly, not menacingly, but warmly. “Mr Jones had business in Moscow and I invited him to the ballet.”
“I could never regret accepting his invitation. Not after I saw you on stage.” America added playfully and that made the young miss laugh lightly.
“Thank you Mr Jones. I am honored to have international admirers.”
Russia noticed Austria and waved him closer. “Miss (name) may I introduce to you the Austrian pianist and composer, Roderich Edelstein?” Russia softly said.
(name) curtsied. “Very nice to meet you, Mr Edelstein.”
The Austrian inclined his head gracefully. “Indeed. It is very nice to make the acquaintance of such a beautiful lady.”
She blushed lightly, but smiled.
“Miss (full name) is the star of the national Ballet in Russia.” Russia explained readily. “The best ballet dancer I have ever seen.”
Her (e/c) gaze turned downwards. “Ivan, please... I'm not that good.”
He shook his head. “You are.”
“I have to take Mr Braginski's side.” America quickly said. “I have never seen anyone dance as perfectly as you, Miss (last name).”
Austria became interested. A ballerina? Her movements clearly showed that she was graceful and possessed a poise and control dancers normally had. But she was beyond that. She had a natural grace that was... beautiful.
A waltz came up and Austria's ears perked up. “May I ask for a dance, Miss (last name)?”
She looked up at Russia – which made Austria tense – but the tall man nodded.
“Gladly.” she softly said, leaving Russia and America to take Austria's hand as he guided her to the dance floor.
He wondered if she knew the classical ballroom dances, but as they began he smiled. She knew waltz at least. And the way they glided across the nearly empty dance floor made him smile. He rarely had a dance partner that had a similar experience and grace. But she let him lead and matched his movements.
“Do all ballerina's know the ballroom dances by heart?” he softly asked, noticing how she didn't think about dancing or the steps.
“As far I know, they don't. But I was taught every ballroom dance when I was smaller and began taking ballet lessons. I practice them still.” she smiled at him warmly. “Though I rarely have a dance partner that doesn't think about the steps and the rhythm while we dance.”
He nodded. Only his long experience with dancing made him so sure. If he hadn't, he would have been very nervous and trying not to screw up while dancing with such a gracious beauty.
“Thank you, Miss (last name).”
