I gotta say, I love your paint jobs and your original stuff. And I can see you have some sculpting skills. Challenge yourself ! Go beyond the norm! Look at weird boxes or strange shaped throwaway stuff. Think out of the Nerf! I know ya got it in ya!
Scavenge for any thing that might look usable. I just cannibalized a old destroyed player piano and got tons of parts and bits! Forget custom mavericks, everybody and his troglodyte cousin does Nerf.
Just advise from a fellow prop builder...

Thanks! I challenge myself all the time. Right now, I'm experimenting with printed surfaces and faux paint effects.

There is a product you can buy that does instant rust also.
Stay creative!!

Yeah there's techniques that involve iron patina and a mixture of glue and water to make it rust.

If you think powdered Ice Tea mix is orange, you should try a bag of Thai iced tea! It's got added dye powder!

The contrast between your wood and metal looks great. Where did you find the wings?

It'd look absolutely perfect if it didn't have that silly Nerf pullback.

Thanks! I love the shape of the Nite Finder and still have some things that I want to add to it. It only has one LED which is NOT ENOUGH LEDS NEEDS MOAR LIGHTS!

That's really good to know. I'm never sure if my ideas translate well to the finished piece, or if I personally think something looks really awesome, but everyone else thinks it's just another blah custom painted steampunk Maverick. Seriously, GIS "nerf maverick paint", there's like a million of those things. Or click this: [link]

Ehrmehgerd, please tell me how you accomplished the wood grain effect! I have a hard time getting that right so I usually just wind up wrapping the handles in leather...

Thanks! My goal is to use existing Nerf guns that people have seen painted and Steampunk'd a million times, and do something new without completely changing the original gun.

That makes sense! Thanks! I figured it had to be a dart issue since the Nite Finder is one of the oldest N Strike guns, and Nerf's been through like 5 different darts since it came out. I don't like spending the time to remove air restrictors, magazine eject tabs, pad the springs, etc, unless it's requested. It's especially a lot of work when the end user is only going to use it for costuming anyway.
The gauge and the watch guts both have a thing piece of clear plastic glued over them to give them a bit of a "gauge" glass look. I should get some video tomorrow to show it off from other angles.
