ever thought of selling this? or making for others to buy?

Yep. I'd love to go back and rework a lot of the little details and make it adjustable to hold different smartphones, but it's not a high priority right now. I made this one two years ago, when Fallout was still pretty popular. Since then, there's been plenty of other people that have made and sold pipboys, so there's not really much reason for me to go back and redo the molds and sell something that other people are also making. :/ I'll wait for Fallout 4 concept art before I make Pipboys to sell.

what name? I printed out the "pipboy" and "model 3000" lettering and stuck them on.

It was supposed to be near the top left

No, it's there, it's just hard to see in this pic. Both of the pipboy logos are on it where they're supposed to be.

It looks nice. I think you can print out the screen hud image on a printable transparency for inkjet printers, mount it on a vac form shape of the monitor and back light it from inside. Plug a switch to it to turn on and you got the most accurate looking Pip boy ever!

I have some other options for when I want to remake this Pipboy. I have a 3" back-up camera screen that's the exact size of the existing Pipboy screen, and it takes a composite video input. I also have some touch screen mp3 players and digital picture frames. Too many projects, not enough time!

The best is you use tablet computers that come in small sizes and very thin. I've used it for a cyberlord project of mine.

Either that, or a smaller option is some smartphones have a composite video out. Or I could just redesign the Pipboy to take a smartphone. I've been working on that, but they are so much longer than a 4:3 ratio screen, and come in too many different sizes and configurations to make a "universal smart phone" Pipboy shell. Problems arise when you try to find the "home" or "back" buttons on phones, they are located in different places on different phones.

I don't have any instructions, I built it from scratch. Sorry.

I've been looking at your progress because I'm working on one my own. I'm building it around an OG microsoft Zune. I plan on hooking up a speaker, too. Mine probably wont be as asthetically accurate as yours, but I'll be able to play GNR!

Sounds like a fun build. I had a Zune a couple years ago and I think it would probably fit all right in a Pipboy. A single speaker running off of the power and signal from a Zune isn't going to be much louder than headphones. What do you have planned for the amp and speaker?

brilliant. thinking a netbook in your backpack with a lead down the arm?

Hypercats In reply to RAXXLANOID [2011-07-28 14:45:09 +0000 UTC]

it's possible. The back of the belt is pretty big, and netbooks could be hidden in it fairly easy, but smart phones with touchscreens seem like they'd be a better choice if you have one.

this truly is fantastic work. a friend of mine made a similar thing using a small digital photoframe as the screen. great to see it with actual pipboy screenshots on it, maybe a consideration?

Hypercats In reply to RAXXLANOID [2011-07-27 14:45:26 +0000 UTC]

I've heard of people using digital photo frames. I also bought a custom one that somebody made to hold an ipod touch, and mine's about 5-10% larger than his, so we're hoping to be able to throw an Android phone in it. Also, you can get "back up camera" monitors that are about 4-5" and have a composite video input, so if you were able to put one of those in as the screen, you could use it to view any video source with a composite video out.

Very nice job, Chris! That big gulp glass should be very proud of what it gave it's life for!

Funny thing about the Big Gulp glass: When I lived in Des Moines, IA, we had a QuikTrip right up the street form our house. I'd get a drinks 2-4 times a week, and I'd save the cups. Why? Because I save things I might have a use for. So when I moved in 2006, I brought a 6 foot tall stack of these things with me. I've had a lot of uses for them over the years.

That's strange, some of the reference jpgs I used showed the dial as a yellowish metal, not weathered black... hmmmmmmmm.
