Lore: In the aftermath of the Invasion of Naboo, the Trade Federation Directorate noted that their nominal fast attack unit, the STAP, was heavily outgunned by armed landspeeders like the RSF's Flash and Gian Speeders, in addition to the models utilized by the Lok Revenants and other groups. While the AAT-1 and AAT-2 had the armor and firepower to stand up to them in line combat, they lacked the speed to chase them down. With the need for a fast skirmishing 'fighter' tank apparent, Baktoid Armor Workshop went to work on a solution.

Enter the Ground Armored Tank-1, or GAT-1. Learning from the lessons of the AAT, AMT, and other models of vehicle used by the Trade Defense Force, the GAT was designed to act as a fast attack vehicle, skirmishing with enemy mobile elements, hunting down insurgents, and conducting high speed patrols and escort duty in defense of static installations and mechanized forces.

The resulting vehicle was armed with two rapid-fire laser cannons attached to a rotating 'head' turret atop its squat body and propelled by four repulsor pods the provided omni-directional mobility, though the tank lacked any sort of shielding, heavy armor, or missile ordnance. Another lesson learned from the AAT was that an integrated droid brain would handle high-speed combat better than a B1 pilot, and so a modified version of the droid brain that would later be used for the Vulture droid was chosen instead.

Tens of thousands of the tanks were produced in the lead-up to the Clone Wars, with the vehicle first seeing combat on Geonosis, where it and its fellow CIS designs were pitted against the GAR's menagerie of All-Terrain Strike Enforcers, All-Terrain Personal Transports, RTT-04s, A5 Juggernauts, All-Terrain Tactical Enforcers, SPHA-Ts, and TX-130 'Saber' fighter tanks. While the GAT was easily capable of outmaneuvering the heavier vehicles in spite of its inability to penetrate the thick hide of the AT-TE and A5 Juggernaut except from very specific angles, the TX-130 was not only as maneuverable as it, but was far better armed and protected and, in concert with air support from LAAT and LAAB gunships and gunship bombers, exacted a heavy toll on its Separatist counterpart.

Despite the initial setback, GATs saw service on hundreds of fronts throughout the war, though its flaws from Geonosis remained and the vehicle suffered for it, losses mounted further when Clone Troopers discovered during the Battle of Thule that concentrated fire from DC-15 rifles set to high power could bring down the lightly armored fighter tanks in short order. Eventually, mounting replacement costs for entire regiments of destroyed vehicles threatened to have the CIS command axe the design as the Corporate Guilds complained about the amount of credits being funneled into a worthless attack tank. Fortunately, a hasty modification by Baktoid engineers that introduced lightweight missile launchers to the tank saved it from languishing in the doldrums and made it a competent threat for Republic armor, though it never truly recovered from its reputation as 'Saber Fodder'.

As with all CIS droids, virtually all of the remaining GAT units were deactivated at the end of the war, with many of them being taken by the Empire for use as training drones for the newly formed Imperial Armored Corps while others were taken by PSFs, Mercenaries, Crime Syndicates, or Pirate bands.
