These are just simple tests, the idea is to get to the point where I can sketch in 3d as I would on paper

I've been trying to find a way to try out the software for myself, but it seems like it is not available to the public yet. Is that so?

it's in development, not yet released. just follow the updates on one of the sites

yeah, the transparency, refraction and glow/light really add to it - especially when you can interactively change them, or see them in animation
