most of the times I'm eating at a restaurant and between the meal and the dessert or coffee, or at the end, I draw something
so it's generally something that just pops into my mind (though I do have a lot of old ideas I haven't done yet)
sometimes there are certain inspirations behind them, like words I heard some days ago, or an image with an interesting element, but it's not a direct inspiration (even if it's some song I'm listening to, and the lyrics trigger something, it's still not directly linked to the song)

anyway the thing is that once you build a solid and reasonably large base of "metaphors", it gets easier to extend those ideas or to combine them, or to create something new...
