Description And know... the inhabitants of this nest: hyrotrioskjan.deviantart.com/a…

Pansacauda arborfretus is one of 20 eusocial pseudoathropods which live on Silvanus.

Every species build their nests on an different altitude.

P. arborfretus is live between 200 and 300 meters over the ocean surface.

There are 4 castes (in other species are even more), the workers, the soldiers, the leaves and the king. In addition there is the sub-caste, called queens.

Workers: Are the smallest members of the colony. They do the most work, build the nest, care for the young and bring raw food home (fruits, small invertebrates etc.).

Soldiers: These bigger animals are characterized by their big Heolldobler's gland (named after the famous myrmecologist Bert Hölldobler), these glands produce a stiky, stinky secretion which they use to defend the colony, especially the leaves.

Leaves: This caste is the real food source of the colony. All members of the superorganism have flattened tails which contain symbiotic photosynthetic microbes. But the leaves have a much bigger, broader tail with an higher microbe density. For this board and lodging service the microbes produce a sweet liquid which the leaves share with their colony members. To get enough light the nests are build with the same logic like trees grow.

Species which live higher have less complex nests because of the higher solar radiation.

Kings and queens: The king isn't the ruler of the colony, it's more its prisoner. Only during the first year of the new colony he is free to go where he want and can help the first workers and queens to build the nest. The young kings, or princes, leave the mother colony with an age of two years and search for other colonies of their kind. Here they beginn to flirt with the workers. All workers are potential queens but their mothers produce a proverfull pheromone (produced in a gland behind the eyes) which suppress the sex drive of their daughters. With pseudo-copulations the male activate the females genitals again. Together with the newborn queens (3-6) the male found a new colony. During this time the queen grow up to 20% bigger to defend the young colony better and to be able to lay more eggs.

OMG! Arthropods with bones! I didn't think THAT would be even possible one bit!  For millions, and MILLIONS of years, the arthropods have always had exoskeletons instead of inner skeletons since they first evolved and came to be.

it's really nice to see someone put this level of reason and thought into creating a species, with logic behind the designs. and your artistic execution is awesome as well - i love the detail and texturing on this series!

It's incedible concept and I'm in love with every your "animal"...but I think the "leaf" could have bigger leaf

Thanks

Remember: the tail is not only bigger in this caste but also contains much more symbiotic microbes.

When the tail would be bigger the aniaml woul have problems to come back into the safety of the mound

by any chance did you get your inspiration from a TV documentary called "The Future Is Wild"? I cant even begin to list the similarities but the cool thing is that purposely or not, you've combined like 4 of the animals in it. it's a really cool idea! if you have no idea what I'm talking about, then you'd probably better go see it.

Hyrotrioskjan In reply to grroselli [2013-11-28 21:28:42 +0000 UTC]

My inspirations came mostly from other sources

For the leaves I used for example aphids, Bacteriorhodopsin and some deep sea worms. And the mounds are inspired by corals and termite/ant mounds.

But I now the show, what animals have you thought are these pseudoathropods based on?

ahhh. I see the similarities now that ya mentioned em. well, the leaf like organs from the Garden Worm or Ocean Phantom, the multiple castes and sticky secretion for defense from the Terabytes, and the defense system from the Spindletroopers, and the whole queen thing goes for any insect hive but I was on the topic so I thought of the silver spiders...

Extremely interesting If you like social insects, you should most definitely read Bernard Werber's Empire of the Ants, which, though quite anthropomorphized, is still an excellent read.

I really like the concept art for this, too.

I'm confused about the colony cycle. What I understand is

1. A prince and several workers mate and establish a colony

2. Those workers become queens and suppress their daughters from mating

3. The prince becomes a king and can no longer move or leave

4. The next generation of princes leaves the colony
