You request a critique? What is the problem? Maybe it is the depth in this picture? I am not aware of technique details on photographing, but learned a bit by experience - and even all that I find hard to remember.
What I've experienced is that yellow is a difficult color to get depth in the picture, it helps if you take your shot underexposed, but then you have to keep an eye on it that the result is not too dark. I tried to check your exif-info, but it wasn't enclosed in the image, so I don't know what your shot conditions were.

no there's no problem; it's just the first close-up i've done and i'd like to get really good feedback so i can improve. it's the first time i've used a good camera, one that actually does macro and other things like that, and i'd like to learn to use it better.
i took the photo in the late morning and it was sunny, so it turned out pretty bright. it took a few tries to get it like this, since yellow is such a bright color to capture. i auto-contrasted it in Photoshop but other than that, it's unedited.
