This was my first ever oil painting so I was kinda pleased it came out ok lol. Took me about 3 1/2 months of art lessons, so approx 45 hours solid. I think with oils you have to be prepared and in it for the long haul! lol

I can't believe the skills you must have to be able to give your picture such a life-like depth. I, like a lot of other guys above me, thought that this is a photo until I looked at your comments! Great work!

I love this! I am sort of a fan of smooth shiny colored rocks anyway, but as a piece itself it's gorgeous. I love the pallete choice--muted enough so that the compliment colors don't make your eyes bleed but still...well, compliment each other. And the focal point is so clear despite being admist so many other objects. Beautiful rendering, too, and handling of paint--it has a lovely depth of realism while still retaining that texture of a painting on a close view. Beautiful! I'll bet it looks smashing on a plain white wall space...

Thanks! It looked great when it was displayed in London, it doesnt look quite as good in the poor lighting of my Dad's office lol.

That's the advantage of painting over photography I guess, being able to change the light. And people thought photography would be the death of painting! Pah!

lol. You just hit my essay on the head! Is there a place for photorealistic painting in today's society? judging by the comments ive had for this painting alone, it has to be yes.
I didnt intentionally set out to change the lighting, it just happened. As it was my 1st photorealistic oil painting, its something i have to learn from. Whether i do it on purpose or not in future paintings will be the challenge.

Totally...I know it takes ages to get a photograph right, but to be able to paint realistically is even harder (I think). But then there's the argument our tutors always have "why not just take a photograph? People have been able to paint realistically for hundreds of years! It's been done before!"...And that's from the tutor's that do painting!
