the dogs shadow looks all freak-ay. its like it is bent around some object.
anyway...its a really nice shot, the pavement reminds me of reptile skin...haha...but the way you put it, upside down really works. i love the lighting, how its just black at the edges, and not a strict frame. i also like the way the shadow spreads out towards the camera, and is nice a concise nearer the light. what makes it even better is the two children sized shadows, which, judging by the darkness its night, should not really be out, so i'm guessing they're adults. the marvel of shadows is fantastic. a friend in semi dark places. great shot.

what a fantastic comment - so in depth and well-articulated.
i almost hate to respond because it will then be obliterated
from my message center. but i just had to thank you
for it nonetheless. i really think it is a gift some have
(you) to leave thoughtful, insightful comments.
a rare gift. one i much appreciate.

i'm just tired of the 'i like it' comments....so i figure if i give good comments, maybe other people will start doing it too. but on the other side, if a piece is very good, i like to comment well, because it deserves it. and....i'm going to uni in september, and need to get good at analysing photos. plus, it helps me improve if i point out what is good in a photo, then i can take hints.
my pleasure to comment on such good work!

had i left it right-side up.. and for me, the dog
makes the shot entirely..
i'll have another look.. thanks, love.

the one that's on my desktop is much better for sure ']
there's sort of confusion in the bottom, a bunch of objects and only one shadow.
now let's minimize this to see the nice one :]

i love how it sounds...

thanks fishy!

yeah, French for black -- but used in artsy English to describe a style -- in film and pulp fiction -- that emphasizes shadows, that's geometric, urban and conveys a sense of high style, persistent melancholy and an unforgiving city inhabited by tough characters. Especially in movies from the 1940s -- the genre called "film noir". There's usually a tough detective, a stylish woman who's very smart and usually double-crosses the detective and lots of short, snappy wise-guy dialogue. Good examples are "The Maltese Falcon", "Laura" and "Double Indemnity".

iamkatia In reply to fishlessaquarium [2005-03-12 09:02:11 +0000 UTC]

hmmm, never heard of those movies...
listen fish, you've been seeing my works for a bit now, right?
what movie would you recommend i see that is visually
stunning
in the style i like to shoot and fave.
i'd be very interested to know.

and thanks for that wonderful,
extensive explanation!

fishlessaquarium In reply to iamkatia [2005-03-12 21:24:17 +0000 UTC]

One I suggested to you earlier: Citizen Kane. It's a must!

Maltese Falcon is a good choice, too! Even though there's a lot of humor in it, it still has a dark thread.

Two others worth watching by Orson Welles: The Third Man and Touch of Evil. Warning: Touch of Evil is really weird! But good!

IN ALL CASES, WATCH THE SHADOWS!

Any other film noir fans among your watchers?
