Description ...we shall see each other once more.

...It's DONE!!!

This was another one of those all-consuming pieces that ate my life for no less than six days... Gah! So, it's a Chrono Crusade fanart. And before I start talking about it--

SPOILERS AHEAD

For those of you who have read all of the Chrono Crusade manga, you will recognize this as the very final scene of the epilogue. My motivation for depicting this--at over forty hours of work--is that I finished reading the manga at 1:00 early Friday morning last week. The ending came as a suprise. I was honestly expecting Moriyama to pull a happy ending out of the hat where somehow once Chrono got his horns back Rosette would get back the lost years of her life. After all, that sort of thing is pretty common in this sort of love story. I wish I could convince myself that Rosette and Chrono ran off together, but I know that's not true. Azmaria talks about the expression on Rosette's dead face, and we see the funeral. So when Moriyama gives us a moment of joy by reuniting Rosette and Chrono in the final pages of the comic it's so bittersweet it makes my heart burst. Rosette undoubtedly dies at most minutes later, after waiting and fighting off death for eight years.

END SPOILERS

I was weeping--yes, weeping--for at least the last twenty pages and a good ten minutes after. Few things make me cry. Less than five movies have achieved that honor. The only anime to do so is Fushigi Yugi. This is the first manga, and quite possibly the last manga, to make me cry. And for that, for having such surprisingly complex characters and plotlines, (which you could never tell from just the first book--I waited for three months to buy more because I wasn't that taken with it at first) I love this manga.

Soooo, having made that lengthy eulogy, I'll talk a little about the picture. The lineart took about twenty-four hours to complete--by far and away the bulk of the picture. I think it took so long because I'm rusty in perspective, and I decided to switch the pews around twice. To put it simply, I never want to draw pews again. The coloring went quickly enough, although it was complicated. I had one color picture to reference for Rosette's outfit, but I just had to guess with Chrono's. Moriyama was also all over the place with the lighting. It's clearly sunset, but the light filters into the church like it's broad daylight, especially when Chrono opens the doors. More guesswork. I'm not really sure if the coloring's done though. I feel like this picture isn't as amazing as I want it to be, but I've also been staring at it for way too long.

Lastly, I need to make a shout out, although I'm sure it will surprise her. I have to thank *Eldanis for her lovely fanart of Chrono: [link] This picture was my introduction to Chrono Crusade, and it intrigued me enough that I looked into the manga and eventually bought it. Thank you so very much, dear! Without you, I may never have discovered this wonderful series!

EDIT

I love it how 2011 rolls around before I finally fix their front hand sizes. Sadness. Although Chrono's hand looks sorta funny still...

I cried too. I wish the anime hadn't gone off in its own direction like it did. Nothing made sense afterwards and its ending was more depressing.

I thought it was more that Chrono was her escort to the other side which is why he couldn't appear before her final moments.

This is exactly why we really need better fanfiction writers. People want Rosette survival fics!

Out of all the anime villains, Aion is the one I hate most. I've seen a lot of different animus, but Aion goes through so much trouble just to torture Rosette in order to make his own little brother suffer. I really hope that by the time Chrono finished with him, there wasn't anything left of him.

The ending of Chrono Crusade is the only time a manga has managed to make me shed tears. No comic or book has that distinction, and the one time a movie pulled it off, I think I was only twelve, so that hardly counts, as far as I am concerned.

Seeing the church scene in color takes me back, indeed.

I'm exactly like you about the bittersweet (mostly bitter actually), i have such a heartache when i think about it, but well, knowing they met again in afterlife kind of made it easier to swallow.
Great work, anyway !

I love you for making this.
I just finished Chrono Crusade last night and, well, I actually posted on tumblr my reaction: [link]

Unlike you, I'm actually pretty wimpy when it comes to bittersweet endings like that, but normally it's more like a tear shed for those lost, not 20+ minutes of open sobbing after the fact. ;_;

But, anyway, this is beautiful. I think you did a great job capturing the moment.

Yeah, my crying at books, etc. is infrequent and often more like a tear shed. This one really, really hit home for me. I think it could be fun to redo this piece sometime and really make it shine because I never felt like it was really finished. It's also a little dated at this point, but I'm so happy that you enjoy it!

Thanks for commenting!

A redo is always nice, especially if you feel that you didn't represent the piece well enough the first time. I think it's lovely, but there's always room for improvement.

And you're most welcome.

So. Amazing.

Chrono Chrusade was the first manga that made me cry. (And I rarely cry.) I too, was expecting somesort of happy ending (since the anime was sad), but it didn't happy. Oh well. TT-TT

This is beautiful. I saw the anime and read the manga and I do think the manga ending is better though it still sad that Rosette dies so young and Chrono is forced to live on without her. In the anime, he dies with her which is probably better for lovers then one dying and the other living on.

This is so sweet, and beautifully done. Rosette and Chrono look great (that goes without saying), but I love the attention you paid to the background, like the perspective on the church windows and pews, and the faint reflections in the wood (those are some well-polished pews!).

really good job on this!

I offically love you. Chrno Crusade was a manga that's ending got me crying like a little kid. It's one of the few manga where every character has a valued spot in the spot and that you really become attached to everyone, even the "villains."

Yeah, the ending was super sad, but it gave me a lot more closure than the anime ending where they ran away from the rest of the world and died.

Curious, who do you think was leaving the flowers at Rosette's grave?

Thanks for this great piece! ^^

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

gameroy In reply to Meari-chan [2010-11-10 21:18:38 +0000 UTC]

It was Stella's sister Florette AKA Fiore. At least that's who I think left the flowers.

the expression on her face also matches the whole mood to the ending of that manga... Hell, I didn't get to finish the manga because i was short 1 novel but this fanart fills in the gap and sweet jesus it's just awsome

OMFG!!!! It is damnly wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It seem an original work of Moriyama-sensei! I love your coloration!! You have all my esteem and admiration!

And I love this part... is very sad when they are finally together after 6-7 years T_T and I think too that after it until Rosette death there is a lot of time that she and Chrno pass together...
I love the end even if it is very very sad... I love Moriyama works

Oh my, this is just LOVELY. The end of the manga made me cry too, and I'm like you - it's very hard to make me do that. I think the only other manga that's managed it is Immortal Rain (which, if you haven't tried it, I think you might really like; it's my favorite series EVER, and I'd like to think my taste doesn't suck).

I recognized this picture for what it is the second I saw it in my message center. It's such an emotional scene, I think it's really, really brave of you to tackle it. You did a gorgeous job with it. And I don't envy you drawing all those pews. >.>

If I could offer any suggestions at all as to how you might make it even *better* (and I know you must be exhausted by it, so please feel free to ignore me), I would suggest making the shadows deeper and the overall contrasts stronger (I myself am bad for being too wimpy with this stuff in my own work, and so I have a couple of tricks I use at the completion of pictures, to give things a bit more 'oomph' before uploading; I can go into more detail if you'd like), and enlarge Rosette and Chrno's closer hands to fit a little better with the extreme perspective you've set up. Not a lot, just enough that they fit a bit better into the space you've created. But really, even if you don't feel like doing either of those things, you should be ridiculously proud of yourself for such a beautiful piece of work.

*faves like crazy*
