“My Cyrus.”

She stalks after her brother after the meeting concludes, ears already pinned against her skull in anticipation of conflict. She narrows her mint green eyes.

Nineveh stops, and lets out a heavy sigh. “Melchior Tahmina.” They’re Cyrus and Melchior now, not brother and sister. He already sounds tired.

Good, comes the vehement, petty mental hiss. “I am not going to leave Tell Bagastana.” There is no room for argument.

And yet- “Tahmina-”

“No.” The word rips out of her throat with more vehemence, more sharpness, than she’d intended. “This place, our Caves, our Records, are mine to protect. I did not leave during the War, I will not leave now. Take Xassa elsewhere, stay safe, and stay alive, but I. Will. Not. Go.”

“Mina-”

Nineveh is her brother now, but Tahmina can feel her lips curling back over her teeth in the beginnings of a snarl. She is still Melchior. “A storm is no different in the eyes of Xerxes than a war. They are both challenges to be overcome. I will not, I cannot go. I will defend the Caves.”

“I could order you to come as your Cyrus,” Nineveh suggests, the slightest hint of a taunt beneath, still her brother.

“You won’t.” She relents, then, calling his bluff as his sister.

Her brother lets out a longer, heavier sigh than he had before, and closes his eyes tightly. When he opens them again, he is weary Cyrus Nineveh to her insistent Melchior Tahmina.

“No. I won’t. But let me think, Tahmina. I want you to be safe.”

Tahmina sighs, becoming his sister again. She blinks, and the snarl fades, and she says, “And I need you and the others safe too. Xassa has to endure.” Heartfelt, for once. She knows what she’s asking, and knows what the consequences might be.

But she will not go.
