Description

Rafica killed the engine on her pickup in the DemiWolfe- Stables parking lot. she glanced at her watch, 12:38, right on time. collecting her camera, Rafica shoved open the stubborn door on her truck and stepped onto the gravel. DemiWolfe-Stables was the foundation home of the new Tribal horses, a breed that Rafica planned to get her hands on. But she wasn't here for the Tribals, not today. Today she was here to scope out a leggy, red, Arabian stallion for her Ana.

Tiyger, the owner of DemiWolfe, was leaning against a wooden fence, scrutinizing a pasture full of Tribal foals. Greys, reds, palominos, and blacks ran headlong across the expanse of the pasture, kicking up their heels for the simple joy of a spring day. Tiyger turned when she heard Rafica's footsteps, and waved.

"You hear to see Feu'Alev?" Tiyger inquired.

"Yep! This time anyway," Rafica answered with a laugh.

Tiyger nodded and pulled herself away from the fence, Rafica noted that it took some effort. she couldn't blame Tiyger, the Tribal foals were amazing to watch. they had the exotic grace of Arabian foals and the long-boned tail to compliment that movement. Tiyger walkie-talked one of her grooms before leading Rafica to the stallion barn.

A Tribal stallion watched the two women with great interest, seeming to be looking for cookies. Tiyger pointed at him, smiling fondly.

"That's Savage, one of our Foundation Tribal studs."

Rafica nodded in appreciation. "Gorgeous boy, I'll keep him in mind!"

But Rafica's appreciation for the Arabian horse soon pushed Savage out of her mind when a breathtaking, red, stockinged stallion was lead out of the barn.

Feu'Alev was the epitomy of what Rafica wanted to breed Ana Gabriela to. He was the perfect height, not too tall for the breed and not too short, obviously had Kehilan strains strong in his veins. Everything about him was fine, finely-boned legs, finely shaped barrel, fine, long neck. Chisled head, animated trot. Perfect.

Rafica, though, was a naturally pessimistic breeder. She always weighed the worst that the foal could look in her mind. Ana was already a tall mare, the foal could potentially be too tall, too finely boned. Rafica wanted to race the resulting foal, then retire him or her to a saddleseat or endurance career.

But all doubts were washed away when Feu'Alev caught a whiff of the mare scents Rafica had on her. She'd ridden Thisbe and Ana Gabriela this morning and hadn't had time to wash up before the visit. Feu used the smells as the perfect excuse to show off. He instantly began to prance in place, lifting his knees high. His tail flagged high over his red back, flowing flawlessly behind him. His finely chisled head shook from side to side in satisfaction. He knew he looked good.

The groom handling Feu encouraged him to make a wide circle around him. Feu happily obliged, showing off his versatility. Each stride he plucked his knees up as high as was physically possible, then stretched out his legs to eat up the ground. The groom started to pull him to a stop and Feu'Alev took the opprotunity to lift his left front leg one last time, head low, as if in a bow to his audiance.

Rafica stood stock still, appreciating centuries of breeding that had been captured in that one stallion.

Tiyger smiled broadly in pride at her stallion, then turned to Rafica. "So, what do you think?"

"I think I'll be back with Ana this evening."
