Story:

The stallion snorted as the two girls watched him from the gate. It was his first week at VSS and, as he was born wild, he still wasn't fully adjusted to barn life. After they finally got the young stud to the stable, Ryan and Tro instantly started working on gaining the trust of the magnificent creature. He hadn't warmed up to the two girls in a week of join up and treats. He wasn't scared of people by any means, he'd had plenty of kind human interactions after all. He just had a wild spirit and would stare up into the mountains constantly.
It was mid-afternoon on his seventh day and Ryan and Tro were just shruggingly hopeful that the next day would be more fruitful.
"He's really quite handsome," Ryan shook her head in awe as the stud cantered around the 60ft roundpen.
"We need to find his person," Tro noted, "maybe he just needs to click with someone."
Just then a familiar truck pulled into the driveway.
"Perfect," Ryan smiled her little half smile as Greyson jumped out of the drivers seat.
"What's perfect?" Greyson asked.
"We have a project for you," Tro smiled, her hand on her hip.
"A project? You mean the giant stallion snorting behind you?" Greyson noted the PeaFrie, now staring past the girls and directly at him.
"Yes. This giant stallion. He's really not a dangerous or fearful type. Just not interested in us. But maybe he's more a guys guy," Ryan reached out to touch the velvety nose of the regal creature.
"But, I don't know, I don't have what you guys have. I really don't have much luck bonding with the wild young ones. I can build a relationship with the trained ones, sure. But I think he's a little out of my league," Greyson walked up to the gate of the roundpen.
"Nonsense! We've watched you work with all sorts of horses over the years and nearly all of them take a shine to you. And what about Oso? He loves you and he was born wild! Not to mention he's a giant palomino bear of a Nordanner!" Tro handed Greyson a peppermint from her pocket.
"But you trained Oso, Tro, not me! I started working with him after you got him to the people-loving puppy dog he is now."
"Just go spend a few minutes in the pen with him, and if he doesn't care for you we'll try something else," Ryan encouraged, nudging Greyson closer as Tro unlatched the gate.
After a moment of hesitation as Tro handed him a leadrope, Greyson walked through the gate. The stallion was an arms reach from his side and watched intently as Greyson made his way to the center of the circle.
Greyson clicked and pointed with one hand as he started spinning the rope with his other. The stallion took just a moment before responding with a buck before taking off at a brisk canter.
With each circle the stallion made, Greyson got more confident in his ability. He let the stud choose his own pace, and his canter became easy and fluid. After only a few minutes he started to try and turn in. He put his head down and asked again to come closer. Greyson turned his shoulder and lowered his hands. The girls could see the hope on his face as he closed his eyes and willed the stallion closer. The PeaFrie suddenly nudged his shoulder and nibbled at his hair as Greyson beamed the biggest smile he could. He rubbed the stallions face for a moment before deciding to take off across the arena. At first the stallion was taken by surprise but quickly he started following him. They ran around in figure eights and zigzags, the stud breaking from trot to canter when Greyson got to far. Greyson was laughing as the stud pressed his head into Greysons chest. Their eyes met and for a moment, everything froze. Greyson stopped laughing, a smile still on his face, and the stallions breathing softened. They held the gaze for what seemed an eternity before Greyson finally closed his eyes and rested his head against the stallions. Greyson started doing T-Touch to relax the PeaFrie who showed his appreciation by falling into a light slumber.
"Wow," Greyson pulled his fingers through his thick hair as he walked to the gate, the stallion still following.
"I'll say," Ryan smiled, "I guess you have yourself a new project after all."
"I guess I do."
Tro leaned in to whisper to Ryan as the three turned to leave for the main house. "They have the same eyes," she smiled, "the same soft grey eyes that long for freedom."
The stallion watched them leave before returning to the far side of the pen. The footing was grass, which he was grateful for, as he lay down to drift off. A slight breeze had picked up and was carrying leaves softly through the air. He closed his eyes and breathed in the scent of autumn, the setting sun sending an orange and pink glow over the ranch. As he closed his eyes, he imagined being up at the top of one of the mountains surrounding the property. The leaves rustled, and the sun set. And a feeling of contentedness came over him.
I may not be wild anymore, the stallion thought, but that's okay. Perhaps life here will be just as fun.
