Description
开饭! (Kai Fan!) சாப்பிட! (Cappita!) Makan!
When we tell people to tuck in, there're a few languages you can use over here in Singapore. Our languages are diverse - but so are the food!
Art trade with , who requested that Retro Pixel Robertson (his OC) be eating Singaporean food with Lioauditore. I hope you like it!
As you can see, in the background is the skyline of the Central Business district with Marina Bay Sands. In the foreground is far more interesting though, read on if you'd like:
From left to right, the featured food/drinks are -
-Nasi Lemak
My personal favourite, it has rice with a coconut fragrance, and is coupled with a chicken wing, fried anchovies, egg, cucumber, and usually sambal chilli (prawn paste chilli). It comes from Malay cuisine - and trust me, you'll love it!
-Sugarcane juice
Yeah that green, chilly liquid in the glass with a lemon. Picks you up in the tropical heat!
-Wanton Noodles
The one on the blue plate. Noodles in black sauce, coupled with fried wantons (also called dumplings) and char siew (seasoned, sorta sweet tasting pork).
-Popiah
The spring roll looking thing? Yep that one. It usually has radish and carrot strips, deep fried in a spring roll skin.
-Hokkien Mee
The star of the show! Can you see the black plate of noodles? It's a must try, and also a personal favourite. Yellow and rice noodles wok fried with sauce...and the toppings are calamari, prawn, fried pork belly bits, and chopped up spring onion leaves. Served on a banana leaf to add some fragrance and can be eaten with sambal chilli as well.
-Satay
There's this funny Singaporean rendition of the song 'The Muffin Man' - we replace the word Muffin with Satay. Hahaha! Satay comes from the Malays. The meat is skewered (as seen above) and it can consist of mutton, beef or chicken, whichever you order. It's eaten with peanut sauce, with some cucumbers, ketupat (sticky rice), and onions.
-Teh Tarik
See the drink sitting near Retro (the brown penguin, in case you don't know by now)? It's a tasty milk tea. Teh tarik translates to 'pulled tea' - it is made by pouring it between two cups as fast as possible. If you're interested search it up, the techniques that the drink makers use is actually quite amazing.
-Prata
Last one on the right comes from Indian cuisine - it's prata (pan fried Indian pancake thing) coupled with curry! A personal favourite of mine, especially during breakfast time. Not for the non-spicy lovers though. But it's great - and some people even eat it with sugar. Don't ask me how, I don't like it with sugar! LOL.
This must have been one of the most colourful, detailed and Singaporean piece of art that I have drawn both traditionally and digitally - and I'm not even counting the penguins. But damn, now I'm hungry...
Now, you definitely almost know what it feels like to be a Singaporean penguin. Hehe.
Enjoy people, do enjoy. Tuck in!

I would like to really taste it some time, but it's really hard to find ice kacang here in Finland.
I have heard about it in my school when we had culture pages of Hong Kong and Singapore in our English books.

Thank you! The food or the penguins ;D
Either way, the food made myself hungry...maybe it's my imagination but I can imagine the tastes when I drew them, since they're my favourites. Hehe!
