Wild cats are very common in Japan, and at my visit to the Japanese garden, I saw this little guy with his brothers/sisters and mom. He started hamming it up- and I was blessed with this wonderful image.Related content

Aw, such a cute cat. I recently rescued one kitten from the streets, and then two from a farm. I feel awful leaving animals alone. This makes me want to rescue more!

I noticed the same thing when I was in Okinawa this July. They don't have any laws to regulate the spaying or neuturing of animals or anything, so there are a ridiculous amount of strays.
This reminds me I should put up the cat photo I have. The cat in my picture is a lot more ragged and sad looking though. Everyone else thought it was creepy because it kind of lashed out at them, but my friend went over and pet it.
I felt so bad during one outing, because we saw a mother cat lying against a wall to get out of the harsh sun, sleeping. She looked like it hadn't been too long after giving birth, and she still had all the milk and everything, but with no kittens.

I think it's really sad that these animals are supposed to be pets and we should be controlling their population.. This kitten was young, so he wasn't very messed up looking yet though, but many of the strays have stubbed tails

I know this comment is uber old, but I thought it might make you feel a little better to know that most likely the stub-tailed cats you saw in Japan were Japanese Bobtails, a native species of cat to Japan that have naturally stubbed tails
