just saying since I'm a huge HP nerd- Snape only has a doe BECAUSE Lily died... it was hers and after she died his changed to a doe (unless JK said they both had one before) but I'm pretty sure that's what it was supposed to be x3 but now that I've stopped nerding out, it's really so adorable- love their expressions and poses

Severus's doe patronus represents Lily because she is the only spark of joy in his otherwise miserable life, and it is joy which creates a patronus. Tonks's patronus changed when she fell in love with Remus presumably because she thereby acquired a new source of joy. Severus's love for Lily was his source of joy all along, so his patronus would have been a doe from the very beginning.
Nothing in the book indicates Lily's patronus was a doe (or that James's was a stag, for that matter). The business about Severus and Lily having the same patronus was doubtless put in the film to make sure no one missed the symbolism. Ichijouji based her drawing on film-canon, which is fine, but like you I generally stick with book-canon. It's a personal preference.
