I guess it's the somewhat thickish outlines and soft shading.
Thanks. I should probably use a smaller brush to avoid that.

Try using the curveline tool on Microsoft Paint with a medium-thick setting to trace your line art. It will take a while, but after you do it, use another graphics program (such as PhotoShop or the GIMP) to remove everything but the tranced portion (brightness/contrast is useful for ths step). Once you have you clean, yet pixelated lineart, use the bucket fill to add color. Open InkScape and use the Import option to import your new line art, then use the Trace Bitmap option, unchecking the smooth box and hitting okay. Copy and paste this image into Microsoft Paint and save as PNG. Open the file in your graphics program to add shading.
