It's more of an avatar, but the clothing is similar to stuff I own. I actually don't look much like her. >.<

Soft lines and soft colours make for a soft-looking lady :3c

Needs more contrast and definition of colour areas if you want to rely less on lines.

Yeah, that's something I was struggling with. I'm always a little too safe with the colors I use.

Try doing a defined grayscale underpainting and then coloring on top, then adjusting light & shade more on top of that.

Hmm... that's a really good idea. When I color on top, would I be doing so with a lower opacity or something so that I can still see the shading underneath? Or would the underpainting just act as a guideline for what values I'm using later? That's something that has always confused me.

I usually make a complete underpainting in grayscale, but won't make the darkest areas too dark. Then I put a multiply layer on top for the colour, and then bring areas of light up with more opaque color; I use that technique most of the time with acrylics/oils too, kind of like glazing but digitally.Β
Most often I do a well-detailed underpainting, but not too much; the final details you want to have in colour, and the biggest contrast goes to where you want most attention from the viewer; important clothing bits, paraphernalia, the face, etc.

Thanks! I'll give that a shot next time I'm able to play around with color. I appreciate the advice!
