You think I don’t see you
   Sat alone
   [Haunted and sad]
Your once flexible hands
Fumbling to stroke the aged silver locket
Hung around your throat
     On a piece of fraying black ribbon.

Once you showed me,
The ageing sepia photographs
   Of you and him
       [Smiling]
But I know they are nothing but a false memory,
Always capturing the wrong moment,
     False perception.

  You think I don’t know
The way he treated you, how when I was younger
     I used to sit [Terrified]
My back against my bedroom door, hiding from the shouts
And the dull thumping
       That you told me came from next door.

Your mind has blocked out the truth
  Letting only the good times seep like a mist
     Through the invisible barriers…
Though I know, that no matter how hard
You try and convince me you were right together
       [True romance]
The bad times cling like cobwebs in the darkest corner,
   Always just out of reach for removal…

And so that’s why, when I see you
   Rocking slowly
Backwards and forwards in your old wooden chair,
And the silvery tears fall down your ashen cheeks
I know you’re not crying because you miss him,
       You’re crying because you’re relieved.
