This is the finished piece from that WIP I posted some time ago.

Darkholm is the main antagonist of my Dark Story, just as this guy is the main protagonist. His name is Dante.

First things first (from the comments I've gotten), the lighting effects in this are simple to obtain. It's nothing more than using the outer and inner glow effects in photoshop.

Generally, you can get a really nice contrast in what is glowing and not glowing by putting a somewhat transparent filter between the glow and the rest of the content. In this case, a layer filled with black and set to about 80% opacity.

As for the story this character falls into. I call it "A Dark Story." For lack of a better title or perhaps any original ideas on my part. However, it does sum it up pretty nicely. Two titles I had before were "Darkness" and "Sinless," the former of which was dropped after I learned about "The Darkness" quite a few years ago.

This character, Dante, starts out like any other hero. He's a good guy, living out his life in his hometown. He does all kinds of jobs around the town, running errands, making repairs, etc.

However, he is most notable for being able to swiftly kick ass.

The section of the country that his hometown is nestled in is in the middle of a rather barren desert and supplies must be brought in regularly from more fertile areas. On the off chance that he isn't riding with the supply convoys as a guardian, he'll act as a lookout for them when they are coming in.

You may be wondering about the arms, right?

Well, the short version of the story is that he gained them during his first encounter with Darkholm. That's all I think I should say right now

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not exactly an original person. I'm gotten many of my ideas from the different things I've watched and played over the years.

Those arms of his are kinda inspired by Nero's arm in DMC4. Not to say they stretch out and grab things, but they do a very good job of slamming and smashing any opponent Dante may have.

Originally, Dante had a sword. He also had a mechanical arm... guns... all kinds of different things. Like Darkholm, this character has seen many a redesign.

The reason he now just has his fists (albeit empowered), it's because I am tired of all of the swordplay (not to say Darkholm will lose his sword. No, no, I like him having it). I kind of intend this story to become a video game, so I'm trying to craft a character that will work well in such a formula.

As such, if it did become a game, those arms would adapt. I'd give the player the ability to choose what they want to fight with. Starting off, they can just use their fists, get a feel for fighting. Then, if they wanted to start using weapons, the arms could evolve and become what they want. Swords, guns, blunt weapons, whatever.

I would want to give them a variety, but not make it a true non-linear experience. Whie I like games like Fable, I think a mistake that is made there is that it comes off as a game that is going to let you do whatever you want, however, it has a story to tell and hopes the player will come along for the ride.

I hope that makes sense... it's like... 6:30am and I have yet to go to sleep D:
