Description My second (ever) watercolor painting, for my Beginning Watercolor class.
This is 100% watercolor. Nothing else was used. It was drawn on Arches 140 lb cold press. The actual size is about 16x21 inches.

A bit better than my previous try at watercolor, IMO. Still some things I don't like much about it.

This is of Chloe, my baby. She is a longhaired dachshund (chocolate piebald).
I'm going to make a print of this and give it to my aunt and uncle for Christmas (They take care of Chloe when I'm gone )

So glad to hear it, hard to believe that was your first watercolor. You have great instincts for the media.

Wow, it's amazing how much detail you can get into watercolor! And this was only your second watercolor painting ever? Holy crap! Even when I was just working with ink wash brushes never wanted to agree with me.

Do you happen to offer these kinds of pictures as commissions? I looked at your page, but under pet portraits I only saw graphite studies. Is that all that's available right now? Thanks!

Thank you!
I do offer pet portrait paintings for commissions, I just don't have them on my commission page because I havn't figured out a good price for them yet ^^ For the most part, though, a full pet portrait painting starts around $100 for 11x14"

Ah okay! I'll have to keep an eye and see when your commissions are open again. And see if I have any decent pictures of my pet, hehe.

Aw I like this one, but not the jacket. Think that people should not dress their dogs in clothes ...

Idess In reply to Eithanta [2010-07-03 19:06:22 +0000 UTC]

I think it's stupid to put dogs in things like pajamas and dresses and shirts, but I don't see what's wrong with jackets. Chloe gets cold easily, and because she's a dachshund her belly is only 3-5" from the ground and easily gets wet. A jacket/coat protects her from getting soaking wet when it's raining/snowing outside. It's just practicality

Amazing stuff especially considering how new you were at the time to watercolor. Well blended in parts with sharp lines for others and so nicely saturated too It can be such an unforgiving medium

This is not watercolor. I refuse to believe that! It was done with magic. ouo It's amazing. For a moment I could have sworn that was a photo. The depth, the detail, it's phenomenal. Your dog is adorable. Doxies are love. ^^ I might be getting my cousins before the move away. She's a brown longhaired dachshund and her name is Rosie.

Hahaha, I love watercolors. I need to buy some watercolor pencils... I hope so! My mom doesn't seem so sure though. Rosie is 8 years old and has some back problems. I don't know what problems, just that she has some. My mom worries about the vet bills and us not being able to afford them. :/

I'm very impressed with the fur -- a texture that's really quite hard to do in watercolor.

I love her coat!

For a second there I actually thought it was a photo (at least as a thumbnail). I love the colors and it's impressive that you didn't use anything beside watercolors. Also great for your second try . The way you rendered fur must've took some time, you can almost see each hair on Chloe's cute face.

I need to start using refs as well, at least to improve at realism

Idess In reply to Keaze [2008-12-23 16:30:26 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! ^^
I feel bad sometimes copying straight from a photo, but it was a class assignment so I didn't have a choice XD But it does help with realism a lot

Keaze In reply to Idess [2008-12-28 15:04:13 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know what you mean. It can be rather unsatisfying, using photos as a direct reference. Still, it really looks great and I bet you learned a lot from it
