Description Just yesterday I was looking through my Dog breeds book, and decided to do a drawing based off the dog poses in there as detailed and 'realistic' as I can

Greyhounds are amazing dogs, I always loved their grace. I think I drew the head/nose a tad too big in this, but I like it anyway ^^ This one took longer than the Dogo Argentino did.

The pose is referenced, and I do not claim it as my own.
But otherwise, the art is © Me, M. 'Idess' Sherwood.

I don't think your head/nose is too bad. You have to remember that racing greys are, typically, more muscular and actually bigger dogs then their showdog counterparts. The only thing I really see is the top of the neck is a little too fat. They taper into in a bigger base at the bottom from the head (it's why they have to have martingale collars because they slip right out of normal ones). I would say bring the top line of the neck a down a little bit and it would be about perfect!

After looking at some greys from the side closer, I'd say the neck is pretty spot-on! Silly me, too busy scritching soft ears to pay attention to the neck! LOL!

I love this, it looks exactly like my Greyhound, Kevin
Beware, as an artist, of making their necks too thick! They do look a bit out of proportion, like giraffes. Also, their chests are more barrel-like, with huge lungs and reeeaaally skinny middle sections, and the elbow should probably be a bit lower.
Still, the likeness is great! As is the permanent "bambi-eyes" face! haha

I have a greyhound that looks JUST like this, she has tha same spots in the exact places, and the same colors as well.
If I didn't know better, I'd say this is her mom. XD
perfect, amazing, work. It's very, very realistic.

Great realism, the face is beautiful. But you haven't quite got the chest/stomach shape right. They are very slim and deep chested. You have gone for a more normal dog underbelly shape.

It is very good though.

I think it just depends on the dog. My grey's belly and tuck aren't quite as pronounced in his rescue pictures and are definitely less pronounced now that he lives the sweet life instead of the track life! Of course, track dogs are usually bigger boned and heavier so they look a little different than their show dog (the archtype of the breed, typical "sophisticated" dog look) counterparts. Ex-racing greys are substantially more prominent in society since so many are bred for their trade every year. Take a look at a couple of pictures of my dog and see if you can see what I mean.

His rescue photo: [link] !/photo.php?fbid=111614078855442&set=a.100504613299722.1056.100000205510530&theater Note that his tuck and belly are fairly pronounced. He is also, pretty much, at racing weight (he was 72lbs when we adopted him). Keep in mind that the showdog standard weight for these dogs is max of 70 lbs for males and 65lbs for females! They say to put about 5lbs on the ex-racer for a more "normal" weight for the dogs in the adoptive home but no more so the normal weight for my dog would be close to 80lbs.

Here he's been with us for 3-4 months and you can see that his chest isn't quite as pronounced as it was in the rescue photo and he's at a more normal weight for him. [link] !/photo.php?fbid=132411753442341&set=a.100504613299722.1056.100000205510530&theater

Here's one of him sitting from the side. You can see how un-curvy his chest is. LOL! [link] !/photo.php?fbid=196275910389258&set=a.100504613299722.1056.100000205510530&theater

Also, keep in mind that show animals are usually a couple of inches shorter max than racing animals. It's so funny to think that these animals weigh 60-70lbs normally and are as tall as a small great dane that weighs twice as much normally!

My grey's belly and tuck look pretty close to this. Racers are thicker (the "typical" greyhound, the ones you see in movies or think of when you think sophistication are more likely the show variety and are actually smaller framed and lighter than the racing stock). Plus, as they go from the track to their adopted home, they tend to lose a little of the "emaciated" look as they put on some "I'm not longer a working animal but a cherished pet" pounds.

(sorry for the late reply here XD)
The drawing was 100% from a ref photo, and as accurate as possible. I do know that sighthounds like this have much deeper chests and thinner abdomen, but the photo I referenced was not so, thus the drawing mirrored that

i don't think the nose is too big at all. they re all different with greyhounds brora has a very long nose where as rippley doesnt .maybe because they are all so closely related

You need more shadows. You'll be surprised how dark shadows can get on an object (even one that's pure white)

Nevertheless it's a wonderfuly picture, and I think that moving onto to realism will greatly help your digital designs.

Idess In reply to samth [2007-04-19 03:32:11 +0000 UTC]

thank you ^^
Im not sure if it was just the photo or not, but the shadows didn't seem to get very dark at all. I mean I know shading real well, and usually go dark, but I was trying to get these as close to the reference photos as possible :3
