FANTASTIC drawing - I am so jealous. One thing, but this is because I am a huge Ringer - bookwise, moviewise less so: Legolas can't be around a hundred years in this. This is a widely debated topic, but from Tolkien's notes, Elves either reach full growth at 50 or 100. Some say that Elves hit puberty at 50, and are fully grown at a hundred, others say 25 and 50.
Though I'm probably the only person who cares, so...

Tolkien's elves reach adulthood at 100 years and reach their adult height at 50 years. Elves look about the equivalent of 7 for a human when they are 20 years old. Legolas might be around 20 years in this picture, but he is certainly not 100 years. I like the picture though, you really are a good artist and they are adorable. So well done, but research Tolkien's elves before estimating their ages, please.

This is kind of reassuring, if you're an elf. I used to feel sorry for them because if they could be kids for only about 15 years, what fun is it being grown up for all of eternity?

There's gonna be a new movie called " The Hobbit: The Deslation of Smaug " , comming soon! But, I do love this picture, too! It always reminds me of when I was just that little. So full of energy but as you get older not so much, the energy just fades away like the time itself.......!

For 100, he's still a cutie! And I say this from a completely, non-"Oh my god! Do me." fangirl perspective. And Thranduil... I have yet to see his place in all this, but as Legolas' father, I'm sure he has the same sort of standoffishness and semi-divine quality all elven rulers, if not their subjects, seem to have.

I don't think they're standoffish to their family-
They seem stiff, but I think it is just a professional-sort of persona, If I recall Elrond had a quite - emotional sort of response to the thought of losing Arwen.
I think they are just very-... distant. Almost like they're not really there in the conversation but they are because they're responding... :\ Still more facial expressions than Kristen Stewart.

It's like I'm always in fear of not being good enough to talk with them, let alone be in their presence, if I mess something up. Then again, considering I remember Elrond as not being supportive of his daughter's love affair with a mortal, though now I understand the reasons why, it's no surprise that I think all elves are brought up to not be overly emotional, even around family.

Tolkien's elves are adults at 100 and reach their adult height at 50. In this picture Legolas shouldn't be older than 20 human years. Also, elves actually do have their own variation on years called yen (there should be an accent over the e but I don't know how to do that) which are the length of 144 solar years.

First: aaaawwww, sooo precious!!! (oh, Valar, I swear I did not mean to do that)
Second: Interesting interpretation. I've always imagined that elves grew at the same rate as humans until about 19-29 years of age when they just stopped. The only thing that marks them as older than that is their bearing and their expression--a lot of body language. I'd never though of them just growing slower....

I read that elves age slower than men physically, reaching full height around 50 years and becoming sexually mature sometime after that. They then cease to age physically, but continue to age mentally. Also, they mentally age faster than men and can speak fully at only a year old. Gimli is 138 and Aragorn is 87, when the fellowship is formed I believe, and Legolas is certainly older than them but he probably isn't more than 2000 years old and was born in the third age based on the history of his father, Thranduil.

Ooh, interesting. I'll keep that in mind. Where did you learn all this? Also, I'm not sure how old Legolas is in the books when the Fellowship is formed, but in the movies he's 2931, which is definitely way over 2000, but there are quite a few changes in the movies (not that that makes them bad because they're not).

Spaceball-Ricochet In reply to FantasiaVII [2013-01-13 04:17:40 +0000 UTC]
Though there are plenty of changes to the films, it is still keeping Legolas in the Third Age. From what I've read by various Tolkien interpretations this makes the most sense since Legolas is definitely a young elf and in some ways he is more youthful than Aragorn (who is numerically far younger), having not been on very many quests for example. Under 2000 seems more likely, but 2931 is possible. It's a tricky business with the films anyway, though, since they changed Frodo's age by turning the 17 years between Bilbo's departure and his own leaving the shire into no more than a month.

I almost have to keep two calendars in my mind for Middle-earth: one with the seventeen years and Legolas's age unknown, and one without the seventeen years and Legolas being 2931. One for the books, one for the movies. It also changes Aragorn's age; with the seventeen years, he was ten at the time of the Hobbit, without he was twenty-seven (if, of course. he's eighty-seven at the time of LotR). It makes my brain hurt. I try, no matter what version, to think of Legolas and Aragorn as being at sort of the same maturity level, just because it's easier to fit in a lot of the fanfics I read in which they're friends before LotR (aka The Mellon Chronicles). I've been trying to set down a better calendar, though, and fit in things, by brushing up on my history, but every time I go to a bookstore, they seem to have everything by the Silmarillion.

I tend to just think of their ages as they are in the book and ignore the inconstancies that the films created by glossing over the 17 years. Legolas in my mind tends to be around 1000 years old, give or take. The age the films give doesn't affect anything in it so I sort of ignore it xD. I like to imagine that Legolas and Aragorn knew each other before the events in LotR (though I haven't read any fanfiction with such... I really haven't read much LotR fanfiction tbh) but I'm not sure when they would have met, whether before or after Aragorn was serving in the south as Thorongil. I'm reading the Silmarillion at the moment, but from what I've heard neither of them take part in it. The appendixes of Return of the King seem to a good handful of information on Aragorn's life before the fellowship but nothing on Legolas unfortunately
