Description The gun for my World War Robot - Armstrong model. Made in Sketchup, UV mapped in 3d Studio Max with texture maps I made in Photoshop. Made with most of the details of the original version with a reasonably realistic looking materials.

I see. However this brings up another question...if it is for use by a robot, would not the wooden parts on the gun be replaced by a more durable material such as metal or composite?

Another good question! I'm not sure what the original 3A/Ashley Wood designed weapons use but the main time-line for World War Robot starts in an alternate 1980's so less use of heavy duty plastics. (I think - it isn't too well documented on the internet and I don't have the original Ashley Wood book.) Since Earth, Mars colony and the Moon are at war and resources would be in short supply wood is a cheap material to use (well OK perhaps not on the Moon). In fact in the real world today AK47's still have wooden parts on most versions. Plus the wood looked good when I used 3D Studio Max's procedural wood material mixed with that generated in Substance Designer.

I like the boxy design...however, I do have one small question...would not the choice to position the ammunition clip to insert in the top of the gun interfere with aiming the weapon through the iron sight?

Yes good point - but that is how the original 3A toy/model version is (plus I think the clip should be the other war around too). Then again it is for use by a robot that probably does not need to sight down the gun anyway - digital vision systems combined with position sensor information from the arms would be good enough for aiming - so it could also shoot in any direction or recall shot targets without looking - just don't mention that to U.S. weapon drone designers!. Some of the other 3A designed weapons have 'smart' systems to assist the main robot using them.
