Oh Gods! These spikey things make you notice how fragile the mermaids actually are.

Lightyears later? This is a great page but that context box confused me lol. Lightyears are distance and later references time passage. Was that on purpose?

Really, I just hoped readers would understand that a lot of time has passed. Time can't really be measured in space, at least not by Earth methods, and I didn't want to make up a unit of time that no one would understand.
Does "lightyears" get the concept of time across, or is there another word that would work better?

It's very confusing, actually. I'm not sure whether this new scene is taking place years later, millenia later, or literally lightyears away, and at what time? The story does not take place on earth, no, but it is being read by earthlings, and our understanding of time is limited to words like seconds, days, years, millenia. It's unfortunate, but it would probably be best to stick with a notion of time the readers can understand that isn't ambiguous, like lightyears is.

Even if the amount of time doesn't matter?

if the amount of time doesn't matter, than you can just say "later" or "with the passage of time" or "some time later" an ambiguous amount of time while still noting its passage. a Lightyear is the distance light will travel in a vacuum over the course of one Earth year. If you're hoping to avoid using Earth time, trying to figure out how your characters describe the passage of time. do they measure it between cosmological bodies? The amount of time for such and such to travel between these things is a unit? Do they keep clocks? Time is important, it helps note changes in the universe around us. These creatures are not us, but if they register the changing universe, then they must have a notion of time. Sorry for the long posts lol, I'm really just trying to help. Blame my philosopher mother.

No, you bring up a good point. The only way these nomads tell time is by the number of pilgrimages they make, but these vary in length, and each takes hundreds, if not thousands, of Earth years. Would "1 pilgrimage later" work? Eh, I might just change it to "1000+ Earth years later" or something.

This will work! Remember, a millenium is 1000 years, but 1000+ years also has a nice ring. Whichever you think fits best. Using "one pilgrimage" would work, but only if the readers understand how long that is lol. Hmmm... You could put in one pilgrimage later, and then at another point in the story explain what a pilgrimage is. You don't have to shoo all the ducklings into the water right now. :3
