The alarm rang as it did almost every morning. A groan was heard from under the covers before the clock was stopped. Tekkal woke with a yawn as she got out of bed and stretched. She was a somewhat tall woman of Native descent. Her long brunette hair flowed messily as she brushed it out of her face. It was time to prepare for the day. She carried out her usual morning routine, brushing her teeth, taking a shower and making breakfast. She checked her phone while she ate, seeing if there was anything interesting to see before she headed off to work. Nothing eventful happening, she sighed realizing it was going to be a boring day, she could just feel it. With that in mind, she finished her meal, grabbed her keys and left for work.

As she drove she couldn’t shake the feeling she was forgetting something it didn’t take long to figure out what it was.

  “Oh dammit my socks.”

She could tell she’d regret that later, much to her dismay her feet tended to sweat quite a lot, having no socks was certainly not going to help. She didn’t have much time to dwell on it before she arrived. She walked into the building as she prepared for her work day. She was then greeted by a shining example of nepotism at its finest.

“Hello Ms. Mazdinc, how are you?”

“Doing fine, thank you Ms. Yure.”

Fey Yure, the least qualified person to be in charge of the plant, but, money and family connections say otherwise. At the very least she was friendly. The blonde woman tried to look professional but like most things she got it about half right.

“I figured no less from our finest engineer.”

Tekkal could be a magician for all Fey knew, with all the science she doesn’t understand, regardless it was her job five days a week. She flashed that perfect smile of hers before letting Tekkal get to work. Just another day at the power plant. Hours passed as the day slowly went by. Tekkal didn’t mind much though, she quite enjoyed her job. It was well worth the years of effort to reach her position. Regardless she couldn’t help but occasionally let her mind wander.

“Wonder what Jenny’s doing right now. Heh, probably ranting about those dumb shows.”

The day was nearly wrapped up when she heard a distressing sound. A siren was blaring, which signified one thing a radiation leak. Tekkal donned a hazmat suit as fast as she could.

Despite knowing what to do in this situation, she was still nervous. The stuffy suit was not helping. She could already feel sweat starting to pool in her boots. Unbeknownst to her, those very same boots had been compromised. Small holes in them she hadn’t noticed. She had found the leak and was working to repair it. It was too late before she realized there was anything wrong. She was exposed and soon she’d feel it. She felt faint as she realized her situation. She tried to back away while she still had time and find help, but unconsciousness arrived faster.

***

Not long after a medical team went in to retrieve her. They got her to safety and removed the suit to treat her. When they removed her boots however, they could’ve sworn they noticed a strange foul smell, even with their protection gear on. However, they decided to pay it no mind, distracting as it was, and continued the procedure. Miraculously Tekkal was fine, yet still unconscious. However, to be on the safe side, she was allowed no visitors until she woke up.

A few hours later Tekkal tossed and turned in her sleep. Her dreams far from peaceful as she relived the moment of helplessness. How could she have let it happen? She was better than this. She remembered collapsing before waking with a fright. After a few minutes a doctor finally arrived and walked her through everything that happened and her miraculous recovery. In no time she was free to go. As she walked out she looked at her phone. There were several messages from Fey.

  “Are you alright?!”

“Doctors say you’re fine, I’m not sure if that’s normal but that’s great!”

“Take a few days to relax and recover, I’m sure you’ll need it, I’ll get someone else to handle sciencey stuff.”

After that worrying experience she was finally relieved to pull up in her driveway. She stepped inside, made her way to her couch and collapsed with a sigh.

“Hey, about time you got back.”

“What the hell?! Jenny?!” She jumped at the unexpected appearance of her best friend. She looked at her as she scratched her black unkempt hair. Wearing a shirt with something that probably only made sense to her. “How did you get in here?!”

“Pfft, you should know better than to think locks can stop me,” she sat down on the couch as well. “So how’ve you been? I hear you got microwaved or some shit, did you die?”

“No I did not die and-“

“Damn that’s a shame, alright talk to ghost goes back on the bucket list,” she said as she stretched and wrote something in a book. “So you’re fine then? Does that just happen then?”

“Well the doctors did say it seemed miraculous, I guess I just got really lucky,” Tekkal tried not to show it but she was worn out after all this.

“Well buy me a lottery ticket next time, but, no seriously, I’m glad you’re OK. Can’t have you go dying on me now. Who else will I have to talk to?” Despite her excessive personality and occasion selfishness, Tekkal had to admit Jenny was her closest friend and Tekkal Jenny’s only friend.

“I’m glad I’m OK too, but, I just don’t wanna talk about it much, I don’t like thinking about it,” She could feel a headache coming on. She’ll have to go pick up something for that later. “Thank you for being here Jen, I was actually hoping you’d come by, I don’t wanna be by myself for a bit. Need to get my mind focused on something else.”

“Well it’s a good thing I’m here then, you’ve got me to focus on. Now, I wanted to talk to you about this shit I watched last night, swear the writers or lack thereof are on something.”

Tekkal sighed, she was in for a long night. After a few hours of talking and having fun, Jenny finally went home. Tekkal put on her favorite green hoodie and decided to head out to the pharmacy and get something for her headache. She browsed the medicines not particularly caring about price, just potential results. She finally picked one and was about to make her way to the register when she heard something that made her blood chill.

“No one needs to get hurt, just hand over the money and I’ll be on my way,” a woman demanded of the cashier, trembling as he panicked. In her hand and aimed at his head was a pistol.

“I-I-I can’t,” he simply said sounding like he was going to run at the first chance. He shivered like he was Don Knotts in the middle of the Arctic in the dead of February.

“Right, I tried to do this easy,” she said as she fired a shot a few inches to his right. “Got the message, bitch?” He looked pale, as if he was about to vomit from the stress alone. “Do hurry up, I’ve not got all damn night,” she readjusted her aim back to his head as she held out her other hand.

“I-I-I, ugh,” his eyes closed as he collapsed to the floor and remained there, passed out. She simply stepped behind the counter and lifted the register key from him. She opened it up and began to take its contents.

“Damn that was almost too easy,” she said as she took handfuls of money.

Meanwhile Tekkal was watching the whole thing happen. She silently cursed to herself as she realized she left her phone in the car. Her headache worsened, she panicked as she felt the same dreaded feeling she felt earlier that day. The utter lack of control of the situation. It was happening again. It was then something overcame her, she wasn’t sure what, but she realized then she refused to feel this way again. She then noticed something, it was faint at first but, was quickly becoming overwhelming. She held her nose as some stomach churning stench hit her. It was familiar in a way however, which confused her.

She then figured out what it was. The source of the odor was her own feet! They had certainly not smelled the greatest in the past but this was a whole different level! She hadn’t even taken her shoes off and it was this strong.

  “What the hell?” She wondered.

She didn’t wait long to ponder it though, it had given her an idea. She pulled up her hood and obscured as much as her face as she could. As quietly as she could manage, she tried to sneak closer to the register. After a few stress filled minutes she had finally made it. She had to act fast, she’d be noticed soon. As if on cue the woman looting the register paused a moment and sniffed the air.

“Ugh, what the hell is that?” She covered her nose and looked around. A strong sharp reek reminiscent of cheese permeated the area. The thief looked around trying to find the source. She finally looked around the counter and found the intruder. “Oh, a hero, huh?” She said as she cocked the gun. Before she could react though Tekkal quickly whipped up and kicked off one of her shoes. She kicked the air, her foot now inches away from the thief’s face.

She looked in bewilderment at the sole now in front of her, it was shiny with an unbelievable amount of sweat as it trickled down and glistened. She could see it literally fuming an emerald color, but, that was impossible, her eyes had to be tricking her, weren’t they? It was then the smell hit her at full force. The rancid scent of cheese and sweat and some other unrecognizable odor ravaged her nostrils. She felt sick! It was easily the worst thing she had ever smelled. She started coughing harshly as her lungs tried to reject the poison entering them. “Eugh! What the cough cough fuck?!” She hacked as her eyelids felt heavy. Her head felt light. She couldn’t take much more of this. Soon to her relief she passed out much like the cashier.

Tekkal’s heart was racing. She couldn’t believe that actually worked. Her mind was firing questions in all directions. But for now she had to focus. She put her shoe back on and kicked the gun away. She quickly ran back to her car and called the police, alerting them to the crime.

She decided not to stick around and quickly drove back home. She collapsed into bed and asked herself “What the hell happened to me?” And it was certainly not the last question she’d ask that night, she had a lot of thinking to do.

***

A phone rang a few times before a perfectly manicured and gold jewelry covered hand answered it.

“Yeah? What about that idiot Rachel? She’s where?! How? Did she say anything? Good she better keep it that way. Have you got someone already on this? Good, have them find out what happened. Oh and remind Rachel to keep quiet, she wouldn’t want to become a liability to us now.”

The phone was hung up as the hand curled up into a fist.

  “Well, this is very interesting.”

I loved this. Please let all of her victims/ crooks be female. That would make for an awesome, sweat laden foot sniffing story. Great work.

This story lacks sole. It needs more sole power, boy!
Only advice I can offer is this: you can tune a piano, but you can't tuna fish.

I see it's up now. Awesome!

Can't wait to see where this story will be going and who the unfortunate souls will be who'll end up under her unbearable soles
