This is a simple two-step diagram illustrating how to properly load a basic pump-action shotgun w/fixed magazine tube -- the most common type of home defense/combat shotgun. In this illustration, the shotgun is generic, not intended to be any particular make or model. Its features are a hybrid of several different makes/models. At first glance, it mostly resembles a Maverick 88, though it has a bolt release like a Remington 870, a two-tone finish like a Winchester 1300 Stainless Marine, and a few features similar to an Armscor M-30R6. It has an 18-1/2" barrel (w/heatshield and bead sight) and a total capacity of seven standard (2-3/4") rounds (six in the tube plus one in the chamber). A Maverick 88 in this configuration would hold six rounds (5+1). The stock is based on the Choate Mk.6 thumbhole skeleton stock except without the built-in 6-round shell holder.

To safely store a loaded shotgun, the safety would be on, the chamber would be left empty, and only the tube would be loaded. However, in a combat situation, assuming it wasn't already loaded, the chamber would be loaded first. Also, this is the only way to fire while reloading, contrary to what you see in most video games. And don't even get me started on all the screw-ups they make in action movies!
