Actually, Sonic was synchronizing himself with Metal Sonic, who had crashed in an area where he could see up Sara's (a character made only for the OVA) dress. Sonic could see what Metal was seeing.

True, but afterwards, Robotnik says, "I get it! You're synchronizing yourself with Metal!" I always took that as Sonic being a perv while seeing what Metal Sonic is seeing, because he is blushing as he does all that crazy shit. He is also clearly holding himself off of the ship with his hands.
