I had a blacksmithing Amazon side character in a campaign I ran years back. She would heat the metal in the forge ( to make it soft/non-brittle ) then bend the hot metal into shape by hand... she would also cast the slag on herself to form armors
Maybe she has the hammer because her other hand needed something to do?
