These kids were out walking the dog and asked if I would take their picture. When I told them they could have polaroids they were very excited. Then they posed. It wasn't what I had initially visualized, but I think the toughness that I saw coming out of these three formerly giddy kids was profound. So here it is.Related content

Yo I like this. Its really real, the way you took it. Man it really says a lot. You can feel where thier from. Looking into the background. Thats hot!

You did a wonderful job with getting the whole idea across. Not only that but I think it's a very original photograph at that.
I couldn't imagine any of these kids being like the happy, playful kids that you normally see in schools...but that was only because they were denied what those other kids have.

Well I'm from Oakland, CA also known as the city of dope. Yeah theres alot of crackheads here and I didn't grow up in what you call the best environment but I stilled smiled at times and frowned at times. The picture they have does tell a story, you can't just judge their whole life based on one picture of them. A picture is worth a thousand words.

i think this is a tight pic, i'm from LA and i totally feel for these kids, i could imagine them skipping and laughin walkin then dog, but at the dope of a dime they are forced to be look tough, most of you poking fun and laughin are sittin at home infront of your pc typing and laughin drinking coca-cola while your mom cooks dinner. Those are things that some kids like this doesn't EVER have the chance to do. For those poking fun you all would be scared shitless in these kids neighborhood where they play and live. I think it captures these kids struggle, c'mon is it that normal to see kids their age not smiling? I think it's sad that' their not smiling i have pictures of me smiling at that age, memories is all we have, it's sad that all kids can't have happy ones. it's the lil' early 213 click' snoop, warren, and nate. ahahha and their pit' baby. I love my dogs i got pictures of my pit's also, check em' please. Good job on the pic man, i love it. New fav and watch.

It's a very cool picture. As for the comments on African Americans. I myself am an African American male and I doubt their nationality has anything to do with their "smile" in this picture. Anyone can take a picture and express any emotion they want. The boys simply chose to express the hard image. I mean they do have a dog, a pit bull dog which is classified as being vicious. Its sitting right next to them so what do you expect them to do grin and hold up a loli-pop.

I know exactly what you mean. This is truly a masterful piece. I'm glad you were brave enough to capture them, I would have been a wimp seeing them with that big pup and all. But then, I'm not a dog person.

How awesome.... the dog is the most natural .. i guess the others were just trying to look tough and the dog is like Al Pacino. O ki made no sense.... its a priceless image.

The story make the image priceless. It's funny to see how a camera change people attitude. It make me sad a bit to know they chose to have a toughs boy attitude. And maybe thats why they took that pose, they are just gitty kids. I love it.

I love that the description makes the picture that much more great--like, to think that these kids were all excited over having their picture taken and then when they "pose" it's in this tough, "look how macho we are" type of pose. So cute.

They do look tough but in the way that only teens who hope that they are as invincible as they think they are can be. The toughness of their expressions is belied by the fact that they are walking a well loved dog.
