What's New


Introducing Commissions on deviantART

We've launched our new Commissions widget to everyone, enabling artists to generate real earnings through custom creations. Artists can list their commission availability through the widget on their profile, clients can then request commissions from them, and once the artist accepts, they receive payment which then shows up as profit on their My Earnings page.

Brush Updates for deviantART muro

Several additions have been made to deviantART muro in the form of new brush tools!

  • We've been beta testing a text brush that is now released to everyone. You can paint on your canvas with words, and there's a large variety of fonts to choose from!

  • Based on a suggestion by WilloughbyArevalo , we've also added to the eraser tool, so that you can erase using some of the same stylistic brushes that you use to draw! This allows for an even more dynamic creation experience with deviantART muro.


Coming Soon: The New Submit Art Page!

One of the most heavily used features on deviantART is getting an upgrade! We'll soon be releasing improvements to the submission process. From uploading and selecting files to choosing a category, every step has been re-designed and reviewed by our teams to ensure a user-friendly submission process. It's a whole new way to get your art out to the world. And with this comes new technology that will allow us to add even more features in the coming months. 


The New Submit page has been in limited release to a group of several hundred thousand deviants and we've received an amazing amount of feedback. Thanks to such feedback, we've made further improvements to the page and fixed issues that arose during the limited release.  Our data has since shown a significant increase in successful submissions among those using New Submit. Thanks again to all who have provided feedback; we're almost ready to release it to everyone!

  • The Collections sidebar of one's Favourites page could not be re-arranged in Google Chrome. Fixed by shahyarg
  • There were some minor issues with dragging thumbnails in some browsers. Fixed by shahyarg
  • Custom Gallery Folder icons were overlapping when viewed in Firefox. Fixed by shahyarg
Sta.sh / New Submit
  • When using the left and right arrow keys to browse through stacks, sometimes the image would shift. Fixed by drommk
  • The "remember settings" option didn't work properly if "My Scrapbook" or "My Journal" was selected. Fixed by drommk
  • Under rare circumstances, a "loading editor failed" error would occur. Fixed by drommk

Sta.sh Writer

  • Embed codes for film and deviantART muro redraws stopped working in Writer, and would instead disappear. Fixed by kemayo
  • For Sta.sh comments, if the comment was posted with an unclosed HTML tag, the comment would display as cut off in Internet Explorer. Fixed by inazar
  • Sta.sh Writer would delete skinned journal entry contents when editing in Internet Explorer. Fixed by Alisey
  • An extra empty line was added when splitting up a blockquote. Fixed by Alisey

Thank you for the feedback left on the previous two Site Updates! Here's some of what you had to say, in the midst of the holiday season.

  • Feedback regarding the changes made to literature thumbnails with preview images was largely positive. 
  • In addition, some deviants mentioned that they would like to add preview images to literature deviations submitted through Sta.sh Writer, as well. For reference, this is something we do intend to implement in the future!
  • Some deviants would like a word count to display in Sta.sh Writer. Suggested by ohsparrowsong

So I'm an IE8 user... and the new submit page takes a very long time to load. Whenever I clicked/typed/scrolled down it took like 5 sec+ to register and load. I see that I'm not the only one here with problems with it.. Fortunately I got the problem fixed by downloading Google Chrome frame for IE. But even if it loads faster now and looks simpler, it hardly resembles dA now because it's blue, not green. Bad update.


P.S. IMO (and many other people's too) the commission widget is a ripoff.

At first I thought using the Commissions widget would be an awesome idea, but then I looked at it and I am kind of displeased with some (and lack of a few important) features.

- Getting 20% of the cut? I don't think so. I'm already paying for premium membership and I don't feel you need to take more out of my pocket especially from just using a widget. 20% is too large; I'll be happy with maybe 5% or lower.

- Add the ability to make comments. Sometimes I need to verify a few extra things before I accept a commission and it'd be a whole lot easier if I could just reply directly.

I believe there should be a widget where I can allow people to see who I'm watching, and a widget that allows people to see a certain group of friends.
Both allow an html code so we can customize our page a little more ^^

Also, Muro has crashed on me a lot, and a couple of times I lost my work or the file became corrupted or something, making some of my other stuff in Sta.sh disappear when I try to delete it...

It would be great to have a "Watching" widget, other than the "Friends" and "Watchers" widgets. I'd like to show all the artists I watch on my page, without having to put them in my "Friends" when they aren't actually my friends. And I'd also like to show who are actually my friends in my "Friends" widget.

You can do that manually - just go to your watch list and uncheck the 'Friend' option that appears next to a user's name.

Hey there! It's available for everyone to use. You can add it to your profile by going to your page and clicking the "Edit Profile" button, and then selecting the Misc menu, from the types of widgets.

Be wary of using that Commissions widget - if you use it, deviantART will take 20% of any profits you make!

Please add the feature to be notified if someone you watch is banned/deactivates.

That way, if my friends leave, I won't get an unpleasant surprise later.

With the 20% fee on points I don't think many people will be using the Commissions Widget even if it's a good idea... Do you think you'll lower, or even better cancel the fee for people who already paid for a Premium Membership, in the future?

We are considering tiered fees in the future for people who reach monthly sales levels, and for Premium Members, but we’d like to see this spread out onto the site before making those changes, so we can accurately project where the breaks for the different levels should be placed.
