There are quite a few brushes in use there, but mainly you make a black layer, set it to screen, set your brush tool to white and then use some good round, cloud-like brushes where you want the explosions to be. Then set the color balance on that layer to red and yellow in both the main color and highlights to your liking. On the original image where the explosions go, drop a low-radial supernova (I'm using GIMP, not sure what the photoshop equivalent is, but it is not a lensflare) set to orange. That gives it the glow. Then take a soft fuzzy brush, make it large, set it to screen and orange-ish red and drop that in the same place.

For added depth, go to your burn tool, select another cloud brush and use it to nibble away at the edges of the explosion. This will give it depth. Once you start seeing what it does, you'll know how to use it best for your scene.
When your entire image is done, create a new transparent layer and copy all visible layers and paste them into that new layer. Set that layer to overlay at between 50-75% opacity.
