This is a lovely piece of work, and I'm curious about the ram heads. Are they lost-wax cast? Or did you use some other method?

Absolutely beautiful.

Question: Is it wearable? I mean...how do you get it on?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Illahie In reply to Majiran [2011-05-25 11:44:49 +0000 UTC]

The braid allows for a bit of flexing, so you can easily slip it onto your neck I personally often wear a number of them at the same time; [link]

Could you tell me a bit more of the metalworking process? I always imagined giant stamping pressed or molding cups, and seeing these recent additions to your gallery (since I started watching you for the taxidermy which I had seen other places, I didn't properly look in your submissions assuming I'd already seen them) has got me curious.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Illahie In reply to Majiran [2011-05-28 10:01:38 +0000 UTC]

Well, with the body the metal strands are actually twisted or braided together, depending on the look we're after Once that is done, the braided chain (which is still a straight stick) is gently molded into a round shape to fit the neck measurements given by the commissioners.

The terminals are sculpted first from clay. A lot of people carve wax models, but I prefer working with a clay one first, from which I make a mold which will be used to cast wax models. Once the wax models are finished, they are moved into a cillinder which is filled and heated, making a solid mold of the wax model, and as the temperature goes up the wax melts out of it, leaving behind aperfect hollow into which the silver is cast
