Description Feb. 2013 - Kaohsiung, Taiwan

When we initially arrived in Taiwan and the ModelMosa team asked if there was anything in particular that we wanted to see while abroad, I expressed great interest in visiting a Taiwanese Cemetery. I have a great interest in human mortality and study mortuary science as well as existentialist philosophy in my day to day life.Β

On the last day of our tour, we hiked up to an old cemetery in the heart of Kaohsiung. After allowing me to examine the unfamiliar Chinese style memorials, we indulged in a spontaneous shoot.

Chinese grave sites can be quite ornate, as depicted in the background. Often large, affluent families pre-purchase a segment of plots (similar to what we do in the States) so the whole family can be buried together. There was a lot more color than in American cemeteries and most of the memorials themselves had a prayer bench for kneeling with a built in place for incense. It was a great experience to be able to see the Taiwanese culture's take on honoring their dead.

It's rare that a model would give an exposition on the cultural context of the shoot. Β Nice.
