Description When I first joined dA, I was inspired by the brilliant work of !Venator-Somniorum , a true genius with pencil and photoshop. Before she deleted her account, she created a very effective tutorial on her method of creating glowing objects in photoshop. I have used a variant of it ever since on images such as [link] , but when I went to look it up recently, I realised that with her deactivation, it had been lost to the sands of time.

Working on my latest picture which has a lot of glowing stuff, I decided that I should endeavour to return this technique to the internet so that other people can benefit from it. To that end, I banged this together in like, 5 minutes. It's pretty crude, but I think it does the job. Functions like Gaussian blur are available in many programs other than just photoshop and there are a lot of knobs you can turn on them. How much blur you put in is up to you to decide, based on the picture you're putting the effect in.

Credit for the idea goes to !Venator-Somniorum , wherever you may be these days.

I remember Venator! Love her artwork.
And I remember this technique. I've drawn her Pestilentia once, one of her interesting creatures, I used the technique there with all the glowing stuff. I loved how it turned out.

Ah thanks! Do you remember if I got it right? I lost my copy of her tutorial and I had to reconstruct it from memory...

Man, I could shoot myself :/ I actually saved it on my harddrive too but I deleted it after I didn't need it any longer.
I still have her species ref sheet about her Dreanters and her OC, but not her tutorials anymore.

I remember the last step though about the repeating if more glow is needed, and the fact that is was actually a very simple yet good way to make things glow, so it has to be right.

I remember you either pointing me to a tutorial similar to this or making one a million years ago. Might have very well been Venator. Love this technique, though I never use it anymore....I should. I still make glowy lizard people.

I probably linked you to Venator's one. I was super fanboyish over her work (although not without good reason I maintain ).
I don't think this tutorial really does it justice; against the black background it all gets a bit aliased. It really seems to shine against other colours.

Been a while since you posted here, was kinda wondering what you were up to and if you were still drawing.

Probably, her name definitely rings a bell in my dust filled noggin'.

I do still draw, I just don't post frequently.....mostly to FA and my Tumblr along with a bunch of meaningless second life crap.

Revamped the shit out of those Tanzec <_>

Nice straightforward tutorial. I remember using a similar technique for a lightning bolt a year ago, and I was very pleased with the result.
