Uh... their past is very complicated... When Fai and Yuui was born, their dad, the king, blamed all the famine and stuff on them, locked 'em up, etc. Fei wong reed decided to set one of them free so they'd do his bidding, and Fai chose his brother, but Fei modified Yuui's memories so he thought he killed Fai instead of Fei, who actually killed his brother... then Ashura picked Yuui up, and Yuui changed his name to Fai, just to confuse his many fangirls...

about their past.. eh.. they were born and they were kinda bringing bad luck.. and the emperor put them to work on thet strange thingie... then fei wong ofered fai (the one that wasnt traveling with kurorin and others) to choose who of them (Yuui or Fai) gets saved, and Fai (the one that wasnt traveling with kurorin and others) says that Yuui (the 1 who travels)and goes to ashura andashura tells him that he will tell any1 who asks that his name is faiDflourite even tho he was Yuuiand fai (the 1 who doesnt travel) somehow goes with ashura... and fai says Yuui killed him?
