Description
I live in Noord-Holland, a province in the west of the Netherlands. On one side the North Sea and on the other the IJSELMEER ,half of it consisted of large lakes. These were reclaimed to make land. They did this by means of mills. So when we take a ride in the car or on a bicycle, it is a beautiful sight. It always looks different because of the different skies. And always fun to photograph.
How we land in 1633 made out of water .
From 1633 to 1635, the Schermermeer was drained by 52 mills, creating the Schermerpolder.
A unique example of water management from the Golden Age.
One of the windmills is De Museummill which you can visit.
You can see how the mill works and how people used to live in the mill.
Come to the Schermer and enjoy the vast landscape,
the mills and the history of the reclaimed land.
60,000 liters of water per minute
When the wind is favorable, a mill pumps up 60,000 liters of water per minute. And the 400 year old mills are still working!
